Daryl Williams re-signs with Panthers for 1 year deal!

For those wanting to know why DW only signed for a one year $6M dollar "prove it deal" and why OT should still be high on our list of positions to consider during the draft...

Recurrent Kneecap Dislocations

When the kneecap comes out of joint the first time, ligaments that were holding the kneecap in position are torn. The most important torn structure is called the medial patellofemoral ligament, or MPFL. This ligament secures the patella to the inside (medial) of the knee. When a kneecap dislocation occurs, the MPFL must be torn. Once the MPFL is torn, it often does not heal with proper tension, and the kneecap can subsequently dislocate more easily. That is why recurrent dislocation of the kneecap occurs in a high percentage of patients who have this injury.

fair enough to those who see some evidence that Daryl Williams isn't the all-pro calibre RT that some factions think he is. but I don't think there's any evidence he's below average. it's not unheard of at all for a tackle to require help. elite pass rushers are lining up over the RT more frequently in recent years to take advantage of traditionally more heavy-footed tackles who are often stashed on the right side. doesn't mean they are bad players.

but Williams has more than enough tape to show that he can work with what the Panthers need out of a RT. Matsko would have had to be onboard with pursuing him for next year and beyond. he's been given much more authority in recent years as the offensive staff has been reshaped. Norv Turner trusts him as one of the best line coaches in the league.

I agree that Moton showed elite performance at RT last year, and I understand desires to keep him there. but I also think he has the chops to give it an extended try at LT. it'll also be good for the team to see how he does, as he comes up on the end of his own rookie contract. if he shows he's worth it, then he'll get a crazy contract in his own right.

the one year deal is a really solid move on the Panthers part, and it makes sense for Williams as well, IF he feels like he's trending up, ready to put down a healthy 16 games, and has eyes on a big move next offseason. it's a good match of player ambitions and team needs.

the time is right to draft another tackle in this draft. Kalil might be kept for insurance, and I don't love the idea of cutting him as a June 1 since it really does just kick the can down the road with cap punishment. enough of that. but then again that's a lot of money to invest in a backup, and who knows if there might be locker room issues now that his brother is gone and the face of OL leadership is changing.

also I think this could signal a rather significant change in the FA policy for the team overall. without Williams signing a big deal with another team, it's really Funchess vs Paradis when it comes to comp picks so far. so they may very well say damn the torpedos and go after a safety and/or pass rusher before the draft.

which brings me to what I feel is the most impactful aspect of this signing: supporting the organization's desire to make the draft all about drafting the most talented player available. it's hard to quantify how much of an impact that has on the level of success you have throughout the draft. having to go into the draft needing a player at position X really starts to narrow your potential to get value on all three days. and it could force you into having to trade out of or into a pick at less than optimal value. I think it's smart to make FA moves to avoid that, and the value is right.

so all that to say I think it's a logical move with very little downside. Williams fits here, the OL room is fond of him. let's allow him to go earn a huge deal next offseason.

Was hoping this would happen...good for us as we get a solid lineman that knows our system

williams is right where he was LY before he got hurt...playing for a long term big $$ deal...and he gets $6m while doing it

but I do have to ask?...why didn’t he get a big $$ deal in FA?...are there concerns about his knee?

See above. I absolutely agree with this signing, but yes, it seems like the knee is significantly compromised after this specific injury.

I just think that bringing back Daryl Williams is counter-productive when you already have a solid - borderline elite - guy in Taylor Moton on a rookie deal manning the right side and keeping it elite.

Because I don't know if he can easily switch to LT and make that elite, while Daryl Williams comes back healthy and actually plays like an All-Pro.

Maybe I'm seeing this wrong?

Basically the way I'm looking at it is that we have another body that is serviceable and filled in well as a starter. Injuries are bound to happen and Williams is better than a guy off the practice squad.

Also he only was a starter for 1 year so he has room to improve. He was expected to make a leap but unfortunately got hurt.

Great depth move and makes us not have to reach in the draft even though i think we address the position even more in the first 2 rounds
