Paradis deal likely gives Panthers enough cap room to find either an FS or DE in FA. Can go into the draft needing one without forcing the hand in the first round, needing both probably less so.

4:50 PM - 12 Mar 2019

I'm hoping we still sign a DE in FA... Rivera has proven we can get by with a less than ideal secondary, but the pass rush is as much of question mark as it has been for some time.  On top of that, rookie pass rushers rarely move the needle too much their rookie years.

I hope we sign someone and draft a DE with our first pick unless there is a LT or FS that is truly worth it (and I don't really get into the draft beforehand, so I truly don't know).  But I can't imagine a scenario where DE still isn't our first pick.

I do know right now we have one proven edge rusher that's getting older in Addison, a decent #4-level DE in Horton, 2 guys that have shown some ability and upside in Cox, Jr. & Obada, and a late-round draft pick last year that's unproven in Haynes.

We certainly need our high-priced and high-drafted DT's (Short, Poe, & Butler) to play better for the line play overall, but getting a better edge rush is paramount.

I feel confident we spend at least 2 of our 4 picks in the first 4 rounds on DE/OLB type players.

When you look at the edge guys we have, too, it makes sense to consider more of a 3-4 b/c they are mostly undersized guys at this point to be 4-3 ends.

We'll see, I feel fairly confident in Rivera begin able to field a good defense, especially if he remains in charge of it.

Signing Paradis was an awesome move, and while LT and/or LG is still somewhat of a question mark, I believe our major focus for the remaining of FA and the draft needs to be on pass rushers.

By far our DE position is our weakest: Addison, Hayes, Obada, Cox jr that's it right now.

Realistic possibilities:  1) Cardinals Markus Golden     2) Titans Derrick Morgan

Yikes... I didnt realize Horton was a FA, too... could probably resign him relatively cheap but wow that is a weak group

A long, long way from 2013 where we had in-their-prime's CJ and Hardy with Addison as our 3rd DE

That is scary honestly... we have definitely got to add a FA on top of the draft.

Addison, Cox, and Obada were undrafted and Haynes was a 4th rounder...

Right now our DE group could arguably be the weakest in the league

This is the equivalent of having Bell and Chandler as our starting OTs to start as season

Realistic FS possibilities:

- Tre Boston

- Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix

- Adrian Phillips

- Jimmie Ward

- Andrew Sendejo

I think Tre Boston slept with somebody daughter because after 2 years away in 2 different systems he produced... And he is around here to much and talking about wanting to be here to much for this not to happen without some behind the scenes problems..

Mitch Morse, the  second best center in  the draft (behind Paradis) signed with KC for 4 years at $11m per.

Paradis, entering his fifth year as a starter is a bit older (2 years) but he is entering his prime (later for OL) and we get a good C for 3 years.  I think he might get a year or two extended.

the LG spot is being set up for one of those "throw a bunch of players at it and hope one sticks" strategy

Van Roten was OK. I would like an upgrade, but we're not desperate IMO. We have to remember that he had absolute poo lined up outside him last year. I really hope we find a LT solution in the draft. Also, this move opens up Larsen to compete at LG and I am anxious to see what Mahon looks like with a year under his belt. Mahon was one of my training camp crushes last spring.

I like Golden a lot but he is pretty small for a 4-3 end. I would think Baltimore would be a great fit for him now that they don’t have any players on their team at all.

The DE FA pool is starting to look rough. I’d almost rather get a sure thing at safety and LB via FA, get a cheap vet bandaid at DT, then just load up on linemen in the draft. Only target DE, OT, OG.

Quotes from a Broncos fan friend of mine that lives in Denver re Paradis:

“He’s awesome. Played an insane amount of consecutive snaps before breaking his leg. Guy played a whole season with two messed up hips.  He’s an Ironman. Everyone here is pissed that Elway let him go. He’s a stud and at the price you got him it’s a steal.”

Jets still need a center. They were in on Matt Paradis, who signed $27M deal with the Panthers (5 years that void to 3 if he's on team after 2021). Total guarantees: $12M ($9M signing bonus). Year 1: $11.5M cash... $18.5M thru first two years. $1M per-game roster bonuses each yr

    • I’ve been holding out on this because I knew I would just be called a homer. I’m sure some will still say I am and that we shouldn’t care about the underwear Olympics without seeing the tape. That being said…. this guy is an absolute freak. 6’3 220, 43” vertical, and 4.38 unofficial 40. And I can tell you I am not surprised in the slightest by following him since he was an under recruited high schooler putting up 232 tackles, 4 sacks, and 8 forced fumbles his senior year of high school (ONE YEAR!). He developed into the leader on the defense and was always the one making clutch plays.  He is going to be the Luke Kuechly for a defense at safety for a decade. I expect some team will draft him top 15, maybe even top 10. I go back and forth on whether you use a top 10 pick on a safety but at the end of the day, I think you pick a superstar no matter what position. I would prefer us get a top pass rusher or maybe even WR but I would be thrilled to land Nick E if we don’t get one of those guys. Would much rather have him over a guy like Jaylon Walker who is super intriguing but doesn’t have the production to back it up.
    • How is this guy still employed by ESPN?  He's probably the worst beat journalist I've ever seen
    • We could also draft a guy of that caliber on a much smaller contract deal.
