Give Hurney some credit

Hurney's biggest blunders were giving ridiculous deals to home grown players and horrible draft day trades. I don't remember him making any huge FA day 1 moves. Not saying it didn't happen, I just don't remember off the top of my head. We're less than 2 days into FA. Still have a long way to go to judge the offseason moves. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Yeah, Smith would have been a real hot commodity out there :)

No vet is gonna sign in March with zero guarantees and proceed through an entire offseason of OTAs and training camp with...again, say it with me....zero guarantees. There is zero incentive not to just wait until the end of the offseason to sign with a team. If you truly think Smith wouldn’t be signed anywhere, then you’re entitled to your opinion...no matter how ill-informed.

I love the doublespeak approach of saying "Smith's not guaranteed so it's no big deal if we cut him" while also saying "we couldn't risk losing Smith by trying to cut and re-sign him" :)

If Smith had indeed signed somewhere else, it wouldn't have been that great a loss. Heck, given the cap space, I'm not so sure you could call it a loss at all.

Umm what? When did I suggest anything at all in line with your bolded statement? I said cutting and re-signing Smith is gonna require some guaranteed money in the contract. Where did you pull this “we can’t risk losing him” sentiment from?

It would also help our comp formula, just like CJ would have. I still don’t get why we just dumped him. Hang him out as trade bait. LA would have bit after Gurley got worse, but don’t waste a guy who can cancel out a FA signing with a few weeks left in the season and nothing to play for and Cam about to sit.

Given reason was to provide him with an opportunity to get more playing time somewhere else.

I wasn't aware we were in the business of helping players be successful with other teams. Always thought the idea was for us to win games.

These threads pop up whenever Hurney makes a couple good moves. These moves do not negate the years of damage he did to this team and also doesn't erase the terrible offseason of last year. Free agency last year was terrible and so was the money he gave to Smith and Poe (Which btw everyone was praising him for that, but it turned out to backfire on us) . This year Matt and Smith are still on the roster. Smith at 5 mill for a #4 WR is still too much. There are more moves we could make to free up roster space that we haven't made yet. This is just 1 good move this offseason.
