I quit following the situation as closely when it was made known that we're not cutting Torrey Smith and we re-signed Colin Jones.

But, according to OverTheCap we only have just over $15 M in cap space right now.

We'll need $9-10 M or so in space to sign rookies. So, as it currently stands, we only have about $5 M for free agency.

Are we literally not going to sign ANYONE outside of our own guys?

Are we rolling the dice with the Daryl Williams situation and hoping he comes back for cheaper than he was originally asking before we cut ties with Kalil? Are we seriously going to keep Matt Kalil?

I know more moves can be made to make some space. But, all indicators are that we'll once again do basically nothing to improve the team from last year other than draft people.

What in the actual fug? Where is our owner, that was espousing all this "being competitive" stuff? If you don't work to get better before the draft, you're hedging your bets on what you can get out of the draft.

I've never gotten into the whole MH vs. DG debates that occur here, but right now Hurney is looking pretty bad from a GM standpoint.

I'm assuming a lot of it is still Rivera, which is a problem that should have been corrected before now, too.

Am I overreacting? I swear, over the years, this team has taken years off my life, lol.

Its called hurney and you all were fine with him.

Kalil is the biggest issue. Smith can be released later although I was hoping we could use his money on a starter (say Weddle). Kalil is just plain garbage but we are going to select a rookie tackle (or two) and we are hanging onto Kalil as a just in case. $7.25m isn’t small enough for just in case, especially since we know he’ll get abused.

Now that Funchess signed that deal, I’m okay not going big to make sure we get two 3rd round comps next year. I think there were still be safeties available after the draft. As much as the top guys got paid, the next tier has gotten around Reid money and a little lower.

We have to nail the draft.

We need to sit Cam and let nature take its course. See who can stick around for 2020.

The cap includes the highest 51 contracts.  Our rookies will mostly replace guys that are currently counting against the cap and will not cost much more (maybe a mil or two).

You also don't want to spend all of our space as you may have to IR guys, etc.

So we probably have 6-8 mil to play with.  That's not enough to sign a big name and we have a number of holes to fill, so we are passing on the first couple of days.  We can probably get more space if we see someone that we want to target at a reasonable price.  Cutting Kalil and extending Shaq could add 10 mil or so.  I'm not sure what happens to the cap if Olsen retires.  Otherwise, we are what we have.

Not having a ton of cap space often indicates you have a fair amount of talent already on the roster.  People complain that we don't have an all-pro at every starting position, but we actually have a fair amount of talent.  A healthy Cam, CMC, and some WR weapons is a solid nucleus, with a couple of OL that are likely to be regulars in the Pro bowl.  On defense, we have 6-8 above average starters, but we obviously need an elite pass rusher and for our 2nd year guys to show development.

If Cam was healthy last year, I think we easily win 11-12 games and are in the mix.  If he comes back healthy this year, I believe we will be in the mix once again assuming we draft a couple of starters on the OL and DL.

No need to panic just yet.

Dude, don't panic.

Lmfao. Remember guys the players are just missed opportunities right now, and hurndog just needs to execute better. We can look at what happened this week, and learn from it.

Every year same story.

Aside from the obvious (we have zero cap space, underpreforming plays, and god awful contracts/GMing) people need to realize we do not just get to pick any FA.

FA have the ability to go where they want. So think to yourself what do the Panthers have to offer to wealthy young athletes?

A desireable city? Charlotte? Lol uh, no, family business city, zero attraction. A competitive team? Nope. Competent ownership? A big ?. Franchise QB? Big ?. Cap space to give a decent contract? Negative. Engaged fan base? Nada.

What’s that? You hear the Eagles, Chiefs, Saints and Rams are the first making moves? Well, they have all/most of the above to offer so that probably makes sense, right?

Panthers can’t just call up a good athlete with basically the same offer as a team with more to offer and expect a yes, even if the money made sense.

Wasn’t really big on weddle and I assume he wanted to sign with the rams either way, yeah kalil is a head scratcher l, still early but idk what’s the plan for him, not worried about the draft either, hurney is great in rd 1, he just needs to stay on pace for the lather of the draft to fill the roster

"Low cap" doesn't necessarily equal "high talent". More frequently it just means "low cap". It's only a good thing if you've spent wisely.

And I'd say that's an overly generous analysis of our roster, especially on the OL and the defense.

The Panthers are waiting (I hope) to see how the market shakes out.  They can cut or restructure Thompson.  If we use the cut Kalil, the savings can pay the rookies post June 1--  I also wonder if Poe is not on the unload pile,  when the time is right.

I  wonder if we are possibly shopping Thompson or Poe, hoping to unload the contracts.  I doubt it, but we achieve  nothing by cutting  otherwise starters before seeing how the market unfolds.

Some of you know more than I do about  this, but it seems to me that we can create about $15-20m (existing cap, cut/restructure Thompson, and use the cut Kalil post June 1 to pay most of the rookie deals).

IIRC top 51 rule is only for a span. Eventually everything counts, so it won't be that much different.

The reason Cam can't stay healthy is because we have done literally nothing to try and protect him while he's been here other than overpay bums that don't protect him.

I laid out, back in December, ways in which we could be staring at at least $35-40 M in space right now, easily. About the only positive things we've done that I posited at that time is cut Captain Munnerlyn, bring back Reid (although for a little more than I wanted initially,) and let Funchess walk away.

Kalil should have been gone weeks ago. We should have inked guys like Chris Clark and Marshall Newhouse to minimum impact deals. Instead, we overpay a ST captain and retain a WR coach for way too much money.

They don't know wtf they are doing, and I'm just plain old tired of it, I guess.

Rivera's "Hybrid D" 3-4

Butler(Draft Pick/ 2nd Wave FA) - Poe - Short

Carter/Haynes - Shaq- Luke - Addison

Bradberry - Jackson

Reid - FS: Draft Pick/ FA (2nd Wave)

or  the 4-3

(2nd Wave FA or High Draft Pick) - Poe - Short - Addison

Shaq - Luke - (Draft Pick / Carter)

Bradberry - Jackson

Reid - FS: ( 2nd Wave FA / Draft Pick)

Either way, IMO between FA and the draft on Defense at minimum we need: Defensive End, Free Safety and possibly another LB. Not to mention CB depth, Lord forbid we have to go without either of our starters. Although, Cockrell is on the roster we have no clue on how his recovery is going.

....

Cam

CMC

Olsen

Kalil (Draft Pick) - VanR ( FA 3rd Wave/Draft Pick/UDFA) - Larsen (FA 2nd Wave / Draft Pick) - Turner- Moton

Moore - Samuel - Wright

On Offense most of are problems are along the line. We need a Center, Guard, Left or Right Tackle(Get a RT and move Moton to the left)... we could also use another receiver as a red-zone threat. QB depth could be drafted but we have Allen and Taylor on the roster at the moment.

That's 9 spots. If we bargin bin we might leave FA with 2-3. We have 4 picks in the top 100 ... Between the both of those we could answer 6 of the 9 with the possibility of more including UDFA's if Hurney & co. play the cards right. Either way, history shows that this year will be average or better.

A first round only draft would kill us. I’m hoping it’s not a safe Bradbury pick which everyone will love for years because he’ll be solid but doesn’t make the entire team better and then the rest of the draft sucks. We need starters not projects.

Replicate last years draft would be the way to go. Not buying into a c for the first round pick, we have Larsen who perform just as good as kalil when he did in 2017.
