Panthers interested in Northwestern QB Clayton Thorson

Overview

Four-year starter with good size and fundamentals who never really improved after his breakout 2016 season. Thorson was hamstrung by below-average talent at the skill positions but never showed an ability to work beyond his offense's limitations. His limited field vision combined with plus physical traits gives him a chance to become an average backup in a pro-style offense.

I mean, until recently "hamstrung by below average skill players" was the Panthers QB calling card.

Granted, but an overall analysis that amounts to "well, maybe someday this guy might make a half-decent backup" is kind of hard to get excited about.

He's a round 4-5 guy

Kind of where I expected us to grab a development guy with the ammount of holes having to be filled elsewhere earlier

Picking him up in a later round isn't a bad thing and could pay off as an investment.

I bet they want a guy they can keep on the Practice Squad and then which ever of Alllen and Heinike don't earn the backup job gets released.
