Have you grown numb to our lack participation in free agency

It’s frustrating never having any cap room to become players in free agency. But what I find even more frustrating is that we don’t even show interest in players we can afford. I never see the Panthers name connected to anyone.

Was anyone worthwhile signed today we could actually afford?

When you are tight on cap space, the people we can afford are players that no one cares about telling people the Panthers are interested in.  People want to know who is interested in Antonio Brown, Barr, Bell, Mathieu, Paradis, etc.  Not some tackle we might sign for 3m (hypothetically speaking) when even absolutely horrible ones are getting 7-8m+.

I'm glad OP is not our gm. We'd be f'ed. Good teams rarely go crazy in free agency. Rams have been the one exception and they're a unique case of a team on the cusp going all in while their qb is on a rookie contract giving them financial flexibility.

If you had to compare the number of times teams actually got good value on a free agent splash signing versus the times they regretted the contract within a couple years, it would not look good. We are sadly not one player away. Wasting 3/4 of our cap space on one player will cripple our ability to field a team with any legitimate depth at important positions. We're already missing most of a legit starting o-line, free safety, defensive end, nickel corner, and third linebacker. We can cover half of those in the draft but the other half will have to come from reasonably priced value free agents with upside.

Much more so than free agency, I've become numb to us making really poor roster decisions in regards to players currently in the roster.

It seems like the big "winners" in free agency often don't translate to big winners on the field. Always gotta remember, every player that is available in free agency was allowed to get there by their former team. Their former team, the team that knew them the best, ultimately decided that they weren't worth the contract that they were going to command.

Especially this year with 80 million being thrown around and even Funchess getting 14 mill.

1) this year’s salary cap space has little to do with how much we can do in free agency right now (perhaps a painful reminder, but M Kalil was a 5 year $55mil contract that only counted for $3.5mil on the cap in year 1).

2) you guys realize we have $51mil in cap space in ‘20, right? We have plenty of cap space.

We could EASILY have $100 mil in cap space NEXT year if that’s what you want. (We don’t want that! That would mean we cut Cam). But if cap space is all you care about, we actually have plenty of flexibility.

You think we are gonna get a starting legit FS, nickel, DE and LB in the draft? LMAO

At the best we get two starters from this draft and judging from our past 5 or so drafts most of them 1 will likely have impact his first season.

So who is crazier, the GM who doesn't rush out and overspend on high priced free agents or the fan disappointed each year when we don't.?

The definition is insanity is doing something over and over again expecting different results.

aka the Carolina Panthers in free agency

There is a middle ground between "signing free agents day 1" and "looking for 4 starters in the draft".

That being said, this draft is deep at positions we specifically need.  I expect 2 starters.
