Just an opinion...

If a player has proven himself only ever to be a special teams player and not good enough for defense or offense, he has proven he is a waste of a roster spot.

Special teams should be filled with guys that play well and show the potential to play offense or defense eventually.

So no P, K, LS, or returner? O.o

We knew exactly what Colin Jones was when we traded for him and he's been good at what we he was acquired for. Your statement may be true but using Colin is a bad example.

I'm not hating on Colin's contributions to the team. I just think at this point they could find a younger and cheaper player with higher upside to replace him. And if they can't, that's on the coaching staff, because the talent is out there.

The thing with Jones is that you know sooner or later he’s gonna gets starting reps (like he does every season) and the second he comes on the field teams start targeting him.

This is the reason this sucks.    It's because Rivera will trot him onto the field at SOME POINT and he'll be completely trash, as always.    I hate having the option, period.     That's the only issue I take.     If it was another coach I wouldn't care.

He's making a little over a million dollars a year (with I'm sure low guaranteed money) to be the captain of our special teams unit. I don't see an issue here. 5 million to be a glorified 4th receiver is an issue I'd be more concerned with.

We have a long history of being inefficient with our 53. How often have we carried ST specialists while also carrying bottom of the roster RBs, WRs, CBs who didn't offer anything on ST? That's where you let ST ability help determine your roster. Those bottom of the roster guys need to contribute to ST. You shouldn't be carrying 5th WRs or CBs or 3rd RBs who don't contribute to ST. Forget carrying players solely to be emergency options or solely to cover punts. Find bottom of the roster guys who can do both.

No argument with that. Torrey Smith at $5M is nothing short of absurd. I might feel differently if we were flush with cap space but we're bottom 10 in the league in available cap space.

In a perfect world, yes but you’ve been playing too much madden, in reality that’s far from the case.

We still have Kalil (with no plan at LT after cams shoulder repair) and resigned Smith, not to mention a ton of cap going to worthless dline players and a shotty kicker and you guys are all upset enough to make a thread about a couple million going to a ST ace? Who gives a fug

He's good at what he does. He's inexpensive, and he's a captain. It would be kind of crazy just to cut him because you're having cap troubles one particular year. He's the same player whether he accounts for 1/6th of the cap one year, or 1/40th the next.

As for him playing safety, that only happens if poo happens. I have yet to see a Special Teams unit chock full of potential starters. It's a gold-filled pot at the end of the rainbow.
