Have been considering this for a while now knowing that we are starved for an impact player at DE.  After we slid to the 16th, I kinda figured it was going to be a long shot, but let's see.

I am looking at both 1st and 2nd round draft picks, starting after the 15th selection over the past ten drafts.

2008:  Phillip Merling.  Calais Campbell.  Quintin Groves.

2009:  Larry English.  Robert Ayers.  Everette Brown.  Connor Barwin.  David Veikune.  Paul Kruger.  Cody Brown.

2010:  Derrick Morgan.  Jerry Hughes.  Koa Misi.  Servio Kindle.  Lamar Houston.  David Worilds.  Jermaine Cunningham.  Carlos Dunlap.  Mike Neal.

2011:  Ryan Carrigan.  Adrian Claiborne.  Cam Jordan.  Mo Wilkerson.  Cam Heyward.  Jabaal Sheard.  Brooks Reid.  Da'Quan Bowers.

2012:  Quinten Coples.  Shea McCellin.  Chandler Jones.  Whitney Mercilus.  Andre Branch.  Vinny Curry.

2013:    Bjorn Warner.  Datone Jones.  Tank Carridine.  Margus Hunt.

2014:  Dee Ford.  Demarcus Lawrence.  Stephone Tuitt.  Kony Ealy.

2015:  Arik Armstead.  Shane Ray.  Mario Edwards.  Preston Smith.  Nate Orchard.  Marcus Golden.  Frank Clark.

2016:  Shaq Lawson.  Emmanuel Ogbah.  Noah Spence.  Jihad Ward.

2017:  Jonathan Allen.  Charles Harris.  Takk Mckinley.  Taco Charlton.  DeMarcus Walker.  Tapoh Kpassagnon.

2018:  Breeland Speaks.  Kemoko Turay.  Tiquan Lewis.

I'll let y'all discuss.

I counted seven players out of that bunch that have name recognition. Wow, I really thought it would be better.

I guess that transition is tough from college to the pros, even at that position. Or maybe DEs are always overhyped?

There's more than 7 pro bowlers there

They are soooo incredibly important, much like QB's that teams perpetually overdraft them in hopes of finding that gem.  It's so much easier to play defense if you don't have to blitz.  It's why I thought it was a really bad move for the Browns to draft a CB over Chubb last season.  Now they doubled down a bit by trading for Vernon and giving up a really good player to do so.

Guys in Bold were gone prior to pick 45 and we couldn't get with our 2nd pick

There are some good players in there, but also some bad ones and a lot of average to below average ones.

Overall, it's not really an inspiring list.

It's the number of selections with so few impact players that makes me nervous.

I need to break it down some more, but I'm wondering how many 10 sack seasons there are in that group.  And more importantly, how many players with multiple 10+ sack seasons in there.  I'm guessing it won't be pretty.

If we go C or OT in Round 1 I want to trade back and get an extra 2nd. Then take Reiser of Kansas State in the first, the DE from Texas in the second and either Jenkins or McCoy as our C in the second. I would hate it since we have the biggest need at DE but think that's the best bang for the buck.

Anyone touting our need to let the players win a meaningless game that sent us from 9 to 16 are seeing the folly of that decision. Hell yes we should have tanked. Its killing us now and meant nothing in the end.

OK that changes what I was thinking....those below 45 I’ve not heard of, not but a couple anyway

we have got to get DE help...either draft or FA...OL as well

i still say spend the cash to keep Williams and draft DE

What cash? Smith, shaq, and speed bump not being cut has us around 15 mil. William's is gonna get 13+. The clown show running this team cant sign anyone because "veteran" leadership is too important.

This. It’s like comparing the 1983 QB selection slots to every year. There are years where there is way more talent than most so you can get better players later. This year is a special year for DL/Edge so 16 isn’t as bad as 16 last year if you wanted a DE. Outside of Chubb, every DE in the 1st/2nd was a reach. NO would have been way better off IMHO to not trade up for Davenport knowing how many edge rushers were available this year that are better.

That's why I used 10 years though.

Yes, this is a heavy trench draft, but IMO it's a little light at LT, and QB which would normally push down DE prospects a bit.  Don't think I'm seeing that so far.

I didn't post this to say I'm against taking a DE...I'm not.  I just couldn't recall very many late 1st and 2nd round DE's making much of an impact in recent years.  Some...but not many.
