The Pats just won the SB without a 1000 yard receiver. When we went 15-1, we didn't have a 1000 yard WR.

Exactly, spread the ball around, run effectively when you do, and convert 3rd downs, and for the love of God don’t turn the ball over—

The rest is having a defense that does the opposite,. Get off on 3rd down, causes turnovers and stops the run effectively.

2015 we did those things. Stolen Super Bowl truly— oh,... that’s because Wade Phillips owned Ron and Shula.

Anyone who has watched the Panthers for some time knows the receiving corp we had out there at the end of last year has more potential than any group since we had Smitty and Moose together.

I put zero credence in these supposed analytics... Cams shoulder held this group back, but the potential is absolutely there

Ah, yes, an analytics analyst.

Well, I thought about saying "analytics expert," but I don't know that I really believe that from listening to some of her analyses. I could have said "analytics quack," but I don't think that would have been too nice...

All of them had some key drops! Every one of them. And Moore had more than the other two. Furthermore, anyone has to know that Moore and Samuel are still learning (and they looked like it even the second half of the season, especially Moore). We did not see a Mercedes Benz diesel engine out there. And, you're right, some of it did have to do with Cam, but a certain part of it had to do with the receivers. I didn't see enough to make me want to bet the season that they are going to be enough. Perhaps this season will give me a greater feeling of security. In the meantime, if we can acquire another legit playmaker at the position---perhaps a bigger guy with a high ceiling, I don't know why anyone would be too upset by that.

he had 2 drops on 82 targets. the guys that we are counting on to be Cam's guys are pretty stinking reliable, despite being green and had very little problems getting on the same page with cam. can they get better? sure...and they will, but there wasn't much of a problem to begin with. between CMC, Moore, Samuel, and Wright, he's got probably the most reliable group of pass catchers he's had since he's been here.

just for point of reference:
Christian McCaffery - 2.4% (3 drops on 124 targets)
DJ Moore - 2.4% (2 drops on 82 targets)
Devin Funchess - 13.9% (11 drops on 79 targets)
Curtis Samuel - 6.2% (4 drops on 65 targets)
Jarius Wright - 3.3% (2 drops on 59 targets)
Ian Thomas - 8.2% (4 drops on 49 targets)
Greg Olsen - 7.9% (3 drops on 38 targets)
Torrey Smith - 3.3% (1 drop on 31 targets)

and what these guys did after the catch was pretty stinking impressive as well. Wright is probably the weak link in that category, but he's the 4th or 5th option behind CMC, Moore, Samuel, and whatever TE we've got on the field so it's not that big of a deal and even at that, he was a better/more reliable target than the last two guys we had as our #1 (KB and funchess).

Boy is she gonna be surprised when Torrey Smith comes in and saves the day with his football savvy and veteran leadership.

Not as surprised as the brain trust here...we certainly could add and upgrade but the key is still Cam's health and pass protection...

I hear you. Seems like I remember more drops than that out of Moore, but perhaps it was just the timing making me think it was worse than it was. As for Wright, I don't think of him nearly as highly as many here. He is reliable for what he does, but no one should mistake him as a receiver with the potential of a one or two.

No one should expect WR1 or 2 from Wright. We don't need that because we have Moore and Samuel for that. Those guys are the future and quite capable of delivering now.

The problem I have is we just wasted, and yes...i mean wasted, $5mil on a guy who should be sitting behind Wright on the depth chart in a situation where the biggest needs by far are not WR. The biggest needs OL and the pass rush and I would even put another safety well above that. It would be an even bigger mistake going out and getting yet another WR that would only take reps away from the guys who are going to be the future and are quite capable as is of filling those roles. If better chemistry is needed, then it would make even less sense to bring in another receiver who would be nothing more than a an unnecessary stop gap and a stumbling block in the development of the two guys who can do the job now.

All I'm saying is it's completely unnecessary to add another WR, esp. a #1 or #2. The guys we've got have the ability to win now and we need to roll with them in that role. Move away from the Rivera mindset of not trusting the talent and growth potential of the guys you've got now and just let them grow and get more firmly grounded in the role we need them to take on. See that they aren't just one or two trick ponies and that they get where they need to be to catch the ball, they catch the ball consistently, and they do more damage when the ball is in their hands. They are what you want and what you need in WRs. The only things they don't have are experience and hype, and that scares the timid.

Plus, we just don't have the cap space to make it deeper by adding someone who could step in as an experienced #1 or even #2.

WR would be fine , hell there is not reason to even include smith he’s paid for nothing.

money should’ve been used on oline.

Cam healthy, it won’t matte. 2015 was without Olsen Moore cmc kB and Samuel, problem is oline and cams health.

The draft has produced a lot of good receivers from the first until the seventh (and post-draft).  I am always up for an upgrade at the position and think that actual competition---and not Riveraian Rhetoric (You heard it here first)---is necessary, and not a necessary evil when trying to bring out the best in players. I have talked up Samuel and wanted Moore from the beginning. I believe in them. I also believe in healthy competition and looking for upgrades and diamonds in the rough too.

Panthers don’t need to go spend big for a WR1. The offense is strangely in way better shape than the defense for the first time in I don’t know how long. They’ve got young studs at several key positions. Biggest question mark is Cam’s health

Panthers defense needs help at almost every position. Defense is a way bigger priority.
