Sam Amick: "Kemba More Likely To Leave Than Stay"

What really started this was that we had three players become free agents during the huge cap jump because of the new TV deal.

So instead of a player like Marvin Williams making the typical $6M he is worth, he is now being paid a number more relative to the cap (13M). The same thing happened with Cody and Nic. The Hornets should have let those guys walk and waited until inflation dropped.

Instead they got stuck with three overpaid players who account for 61% of our cap space yet only account for 33% of our points.

This....doesn't make sense to me. Luka is effectively the PG there. They already have KP and Luka. Why would they blow their remaining cap space on one guy that already plays the position of their budding star. Makes much more sense to go after a 3 and D guy.

I think the most likely destinations for Kemba would be the Bucks or Jazz.  Maybe the Pacers; can see that as a solid fit.

Bucks just inked Bledsoe to an extension otherwise that's a great fit. I still think Knicks lose out on Kyrie and chase Kemba hard.

That's true, forgot that and they'll need to ink Brogdon after a dynamite year from deep.

Can see the Knicks.  As much rumors are floating, I don't see both Kyrie and Durant going unless they surprise us all.  I can actually see Durant leaving for NYC but Kyrie staying.  He's the ultimate wildcard in the FA.  I really think the Warriors are about to disperse while holding Curry-Thompson in tact.

If they strike #1, think the Knicks look something like Smith Jr.+Durant+Zion+Robinson/Jordan next season and are all of a sudden a major threat.  But also the Knicks.

Actually I think it does make sense.  Kemba for all his goodness is not a great distributor.  His assist numbers have never been great.  Donic would offset that and free Kemba up to just score.  Kemba's numbers might be even better in Dallas.  I think his efficiency would be better even if he did not score quite as much.  Batum's passing helped Kemba when he first came to Charlotte, imagine him with Donic and Porzingis helping him move the ball around and get open looks.

excellent point. But again Kemba would be taking the ball out of Doncic's hands, is Dallas cool with that?

I think the ball would move a lot in an offense that featured Kemba, Donic and Porzingis.  They might not have a traditional primary ball handler.

Good point, Kemba would be at minimum a great mentor and add another 3 point shooter to the squad.

Again I'm actually in the camp that it's better for the future of this team if we lose Kemba in free agency, ride out our terrible contracts and truly bottom out.

Everyone keeps saying "tanking always doesn't work". That's very true. You know what is proven to not have worked? This team we currently have.

I would rather see him walk than sign a supermax deal.  Kemba is very good but he is not able to carry a team on his back to the playoffs.  Imagine 32 year old Kemba having lost a step making $40 million....

I want to sign him to a max and then trade him, and I love Kemba...  but we have to get assets and start rebuilding.  And if we don't pay it to him, another team will...  may as well get something of value in return.

I don't think he has much trade value if he is signed to a supermax deal.  Everyone wants him at $12 million per season but that changes when his salary triples.

You're right.  Well, it's still worth gauging what his market value is, signing him to that, and then trading him...

Idk man, I just feel like the worst thing we could do is let him walk for nothing.  I know it's easier said than done, but hopefully we can find a deal for him.

I think Kemba is like all other player decisions.  If we can keep him on a deal that makes sense for both him and the team then we should do so.  I don't want to see us make him the new John Wall though.  5 years and $225 million is too rich for my blood.  I could see something that works out around $30 million per season.

I agree with this. Kemba is great, but he not supermax great. He cannot, alone, will us into the playoffs like KD, Lebron or Harding.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
