Sam Amick: "Kemba More Likely To Leave Than Stay"

DSJ's name wasn't 100% reported but after he was traded to New York, most believe that he would have been the player included in the trade.

Kupchak told Dallas that they weren't going to trade Kemba because they believed they could re-sign him.

Kupchak said that?  I'd be interesting in reading about it, could you provide a link?

I do see a lot of stories.....but they all cite one single source, Shams Charania of "the Athletic".  None of those stories mention Kupchak in any context.

From my perspective the veracity of Sham's (appropriate first name!) information is about the same as what Sheena Quick reported on Greg Olsen today --- nil.

Uhhh... you realize Charania has nearly 500K followers and Quick has less than 2K...

Charania is a very good reporter and doesn’t report bs, in fact Bonnell quotes him all the time and while people don’t like Bonnell because he is a prick, he rarely reports on something unless it’s 100%.

Bonnell interviewed Kupchak weeks after the reported trade attempt from the Mavs and Kupchak said he felt good about the Hornets chances of re-signing Kemba.

Being that Kupchak has to okay any deal, it’s easy to see that Kupchak told the Mavs that he had no intention to trade Kemba because he believes they can re-sign him.

...and Bonnell sucks, he is awful, always the last to know.  Citing Bonnell is not a good strategic move.  #FakeNews

We should have traded him last season and started the tank.  The Cavs would have probably given us their high lottery pick and a decent player back for him.

Cavs were holding on to that pick, no matter what. Especially with LeBron having one foot out the door.

Kemba Walker deserves better. Without him, the Hornets have one of the worst assembled rosters in NBA History. Imagine a starting lineup with

Devontae Graham (One of MJ's NC experiments)

Malik Monk (inconsistent, but sometimes exciting 4th tier NBA shooting guard)

MKG (Hornet's compensation for having the worst record in NBA History) or Nic "125 Million" Batum (yikes)

Marvin Williams (See Mj experiment above)

Cody Zeller (Jesus)

Michael Jordan should be ashamed of himself for the disservice he has done to the fans and for this franchise. The hornets are the epitome of mediocre.

What really started this was that we had three players become free agents during the huge cap jump because of the new TV deal.

So instead of a player like Marvin Williams making the typical $6M he is worth, he is now being paid a number more relative to the cap (13M). The same thing happened with Cody and Nic. The Hornets should have let those guys walk and waited until inflation dropped.

Instead they got stuck with three overpaid players who account for 61% of our cap space yet only account for 33% of our points.

We are hardly the first team to overpay for players and get locked into a bad cap situation.  The summer of 16 basically doomed us for several years.  It caught up several other teams too though.  The frustrating thing for me was watching the team put itself in great shape under the cap and develop a legit star in Kemba only to throw it all away for mediocre players coming off the one good year of their careers.

But after we got out of it last time Jordan swore it wouldn't happen again, and here we are.

On the radio today some guys were suggesting there's still a window to tank this season and get an imroved draft position.  Odds of a top-6 pick are higher than odds of making the playoffs if I remember correctly.

Honestly, we should let him walk.  We still are over a season out of the shadow of the Batum, Marvin, Biyombo contracts.  That's over 50 million in annual cap right there between the three of them.  Biyombo is a result of prior, worse decisions and contracts.  Not giving Kemba a max with the cap increase and luxury line, we will find ourselves with a decent amount to spend if we can unload just a few guys.

We need to target new younger guys who would be okay with coming to Charlotte.  Ideally, I would go after guys like Khris Middleton, Derrick Favors, Yogi Ferrell, etc.   We could also end up as high as 4-5 in the draft (realistically speaking) so draft a guy with the biggest upside, then we essentially tank for top lottery next season again.  Reddish, Clarke, or Rui Hachimura please.  Ja Morant is my pipe dream with a trade up.

Actually, that's my preference right there: Let Kemba walk, somehow find a way to relieve ourselves of Biyombo, MKG, Marvin, Cody, Batum...at least 1-2 of their contracts.  Also--don't re-sign Lamb.  Full tank but maybe next season trade an unprotected ‘21 1st for a legit guy as well.

Morant+Top Lottery 2020+Solid Vets

Ok, there's my 2k19 moment lol
