Panthers Interested in CB Kevin Johnson (Signs 1 yr deal with Buffalo)

Untouchable

Interest being shown in the injury prone former Texan CB.  Nickel competition likely.

He's visited Buffalo and Cleveland as well.  Wake grad and former 1st rounder, but durability has always been the concern with him and was on IR for concussions last season.

EDIT: Johnson did have his 5th year option exercised but was released by the Texans and would not count against what are potentially high value compensatory picks (Williams and Funchess).

He's now expected to sign with the Bills

We were getting absolutely KILLED in the slot last year. That is an under the radar upgrade we desperately need. Maybe even Greedy Williams in the 1st to pair with Bradberry and DJax in the slot. IF we will be spending a majority of the time in the nickel. If our new defense has more base looks then Kevin John might be a nice pick up for the right price.

High potential, low-risk, and should be cheap as well.  Ideal target.

this brand of "ideal" has never helped the Panthers win a super bowl and yet the word "ideal" is still used.

I’d take a chance on him for little to no cost. Why not? My preference would be Dennard. With that said I doubt we make any moves. I think the idea is to play Cockrell in the slot where he has performed above average in the past.

My use is relative.  Not Gettlemanic.

We need to make a couple of small splashes and then some, but we need to be smart about it.

Far too injury prone including a significant concussion history. May be a concussion away from retiring. Smart guy who comes from a successful family so he’s more likely to be willing to give it up rather than risk his long term health when he can be successful in a different field.
