They make moves like freeing up $5M by moving on from an over the hill WR while we make moves like giving an over the hill WR $5M because he's a nice guy in the lockerroom.

So far, I've seen no change in the way we operate from a football perspective from JR to Tepper.

Sadly, me either.

The Eagles are another team where I'm constantly in awe of where they're getting this unlimited cap space.

Well, lets break it down.

Eagles have a QB on a rookie contract.  That gives them a 15m advantage over us right there.

CMC makes more than all 5 RBs on the Eagles combined, by like a solid 1m.

Short+Poe or Short+Addison makes more money than the Eagles entire DL.  So another 10m+ advantage.

Luke makes more money than the Eagles entire LB group.  Another 10m+ advantage.

This is all before Free Agent signings.

They went from something like $16M over the cap a couple of weeks ago to $20M+ in cap space currently.

IMO, the difference between them, as well as other contenders, and us, is what happens on the bottom half/third of the roster.  Stuff like using 5M on Torrey is a waste.  And how is Shaq making over 9M?  That's where we keep shooting ourselves in the foot compared to contenders and why we continuously seem like we don't have enough cap to make significant upgrades - like the Eagles just added Malik Jackson, re-signed Peters to a 1 yr/10M deal, and are rumored to be adding DJax.  While we're re-signing Colin Jones.

This. You don't build consistent winners by paying JAGs.

I'd say our Short/Poe contracts are hurting us more than T Smith/Shaq.  If we drop Shaq, we aren't signing a Malk Jackson or Peters.  We are signing a LB.  Probably at similar value/skill level.

Agreed those are looking like horrible investments...  I think the bigger point I was trying to make was, we overpay a LOT of guys whose production doesn't meet their cap number.  Torrey and Shaq are lesser examples compared to big contracts like Short and Poe, but Short and Poe deals are done...  We didnt have to pay Shaq or Torrey coming into 2019.  We just drafted two rookie LBs in 2018.  That just isn't smart team building.

Contenders draft guys and sign guys to produce and develop on that bottom half of the roster at the cheapest salaries for 3-4 years each.  Shaq produces as one of those guys, but is getting paid like a top 10 guy on the roster.  We pay guys for being good company men instead of good football players.

Honestly, considering his level of play last year, Short is hurting us every bit as bad as Matt Kalil right now. He's being paid to be the anchor of that DL and a disruptor who makes everyone else better while he's playing like a total JAG.

If the world was fair then the headlines would be, panthers release poe, speedbump, shaq, smith, and searcy. Then the Wednesday headlines read panthers sign honeybadger to play the hybrid role, Landon Collins, and any right tackle that can stay healthy with moton going to lt. Draft day goes de, dl, center, tackle. Suddenly we have a chance.......... but that vet leadership though!
