Just checked over the cap.  That 17 mil includes the smith 5 mil.

Just think we could have 22 if we didn't sign him, and more with some other cuts. But hey I'm not the Panthers GM, which I think anybody could do better than we have for the first almost 25 years

Now we have 12 Million... after Smith signing.

That was already factored in given that he was already signed.

He has a non guaranteed 5 million salary. He can be cut later if desired to save the same 5 million.

The GM knows, unlike you, that he can be cut at any time to obtain that 5 million.  It's about flexibility.

Why am I surprised that despite a giant topic about this situation that nobody looked at the situation?

If I was the GM, we'd have the exact same number of back to back winning seasons and Lombardis.

Is Torrey Smith's contract guaranteed?  I know we just exercised a club option but sportrac indicates that their would be no dead money if cut.  I'm sure we have no intention of cutting him but I wondered if he was guaranteed now.

It's not.

Torrey can be cut anytime. That’s whats being missed. He’s just insurance and a good presence.

the second we can upgrade with that $5 million he’s expendable.

its not a dumb move to keep him for now.

If Short is going to show back up this year then restructuring him and Cam would actually create about $30 million in cap space total. Cutting Shaq and then resigning for a cheaper deal would save another $5 million easy(can we still do that or is it too late?)

The point many of us are making is that if he could be cut, which implies he's not worth his cap hit, then he should be cut.

It's better for the player, and it's better for the team.  But whatever.

The reason so many are freaking out about this move/non move, is we know who we have at GM and HC for this team.  Ron is known with sticking with vets far too long, and Hurney is known for making absurdly bad cap moves throughout his time here.

The point, many of us know there is a very high chance that Torrey is on the opening day roster at the 5M price tag...and man, that smells terrible.
