But we'd still need multiple WRs.  Losing Funchess and Smith is losing what..1/3rd of our WR group, making us dangerously thin with no real back ups.

The same would be true with Funchess and Smith. If you're gonna suck, be cheap. $5M ain't cheap.

Ok.  Smith is obviously there for things other than talent.  Look at our starting Wrs.  Incredibly young.  He is basically also there to act as an additional coach.

I guess I just dont see who would be better to replace both Funchess and Smith with.  Do I like we are spending 5m on Smith?  No.  Do I wish it was cheaper?  Yes.  Do I see a better alternative?  No.

Our WRs are NFL babies.  They need veteran/experienced people around them in the WR position.

That's what coaches are paid to do. You don't pay a WR $5M to be a lockerroom influence. Not if you're a well ran organization anyway.

Come on, keeping a veteran player around is a pretty common practice, regardless of an organization being well run or not.

Not for the role that Torrey Smith should be fulfilling (#4 WR on the depth chart and veteran mentor). Not for $5M. Unfortunately, we all know that's not what will happen though. Ron Rivera will end up playing Torrey Smith over younger, better receivers who will suffer from not getting those snaps. If we're lucky, at some point during the season Torrey will suffer a hangnail and we'll get to see how much better that younger WR actually is.
