Mainly, I'm trying to stay close to the topic of the thread. Hurney discussions can go in another thread that I'm likely to avoid just as I avoid political discussions (all hail Ben Shapiro).

All I'm trying to point out is that this is not a bad move. Nothing about it locks the team into anything at this time. People are whining and complaining about nothing. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. And manufacturing justifications for their outrage such as stating how this hampers our negotiations with other players. It doesn't.

So you are going to complain about baseless complaining? Yet won’t off up one thing to dispute one word. Yet have plenty to deflect and act superior while providing nothing. Going on would probably be best.

Here's a better move.

Decline the option, then re-sign him at a more reasonable price.

If your counter argument to that is "well he could have signed elsewhere", two things.

One, no great loss if he did.

Two, if you think anybody else was offering Torrey Smith a big salary, I'd say you're dreaming.

And this is part of the problem.

You're basing the decision on what he's done in the past. These decisions are more properly based on what he's going to do now. and on that front, last season is a lot better indication than 7 years ago.

And you're basing yours on speculation of what you believe he's going to do now. Last season, the new owner steered clear of football decisions focusing on the business side. Moving on from the aging vets doesn't seem to follow the Hurney/Rivera MO. I'll base my grades on what gets done , not what I think they'll do. I'll ;eave that to those who claim some sort of precognitive ability <and yet weren't able to win the 1.6 Billion dollar lottery a few months ago>.

What? I stated I don't disagree with the move and I don't. Tell me where you think it's bad NOW. Don't spew crap about what might happen. Tell me why it's your opinion that it's a bad move now.

So if someone asked you to predict next season’s depth chart, your logic would be to use the depth chart from the first half of the previous season...not the most recently established depth chart. Yes, I think I do get it.

I wonder if Cleveland fans are scared that their coaching staff is gonna play Tyrod over Baker to start this year...since their depth chart followed the same pattern. Doubt it...unless our board decides to jump ship to become Cleveland fans. No no let me guess, “No because only Ron loves vets!!”, right? But how come Cleveland, Arizona, Buffalo, and Baltimore all had their rookie first-round QBs on the bench to start the season? Y’all are acting like this concept of starting vets over rookies is some Ron Rivera original, which shows that you live in a bubble.

And it’s funny that you rage about the depth chart of the half of the season that we went 6-2, and say that it should’ve mirrored the half that went 1-7...? Thanks for the brief glimpse into your brain, I get it now.

Yea Cam going down had nothing to do with the last half of the season, especially considering the defense got astronomically better.

Imagine before Cam got worse if he had Moore and Samuel to throw to.

But according to Ron, Funchess and Smith were the better options. According to Ron Moore and Samuel were not starting due to two players who were god awful.

Ron has a history, I’m not going to spell out for you, of playing vets until his hand is forced with injury. Even god awful play won’t force it.

9 year sample size, plenty of examples. In the end starting Smith and Funchess over Moore and Samuel is something 99% of this board we’re critical about due to Ron’s history. You’re that 1%, I get it, just won’t make logical sense to anyone.

I wouldn't say that I go for either of your anticipated responses.

First, signing at your "more reasonable price" would likely require some guaranteed money. We are at zero on that at the moment and I like that. It wouldn't bother me much if he left and I don't anticipate that he would get big money anywhere. But right now we have him locked up. He can't talk to anybody about playing elsewhere. IF we want 5 million in cap room, it's a matter of a few minutes to make the required notifications. Otherwise, we have that 8 years + 11 playoff games + 2 Superbowls experience to be shared in the WR room through camp at least at no cost.  Renegotiate, cut him and resign after week 1, who knows how it goes, BUT RIGHT NOW THIS IS A ZERO RISK DEAL. I don't see how so many can't see that.

He sucks! Period. I’ve stated why many times. in this thread. There is no scenario where he’s worth 5M this year. So why carry him at all.

Now.....your PROBLEM was with “complaining about Hurney” overall. I asked for examples. You gave excuses and superior attitude. So answer that or do what you said you would do.

So you cut the leader, and screw him before the season.? Think he will take that well. Or the we you allowed to get close to him.

Look, barring injury he's a third option at best - likely 4th. That isn't why he was paid 5M to come to Carolina. Smith was brought in to be a #2 and to help groom the young guys. Once the young guys took the mantel from him and Funchess, their roles and thus pay should change accordingly. Funchess was released but perhaps somebody's panicking with Smith.

I just hope this team doesn't sacrifice picking up a high caliber free safety via free agency, just so the 4th WR can be retained to mentor guys that have already surpassed him...

I don't know where you're getting this crap. I don't disagree with the decision to not cut Smith at this time. That's what I've said. You can make any post you want looking for somebody to defend all moves Hurney or Rivera or Gettleman or Tepper, Richardson, Shula etc. I don't care. This thread is about a single decision, not every one ever made by Hurney.
