Panthers pick up option on Torrey Smith

How many teams do you know of that are paying their number four receiver 5 million dollars?

What makes you think Rivera is going to allow Smith to be the fourth option? Promises that he's learned some?

You folks are acting like he's a lock to make the roster based on the team picking up the option. The contract that we obtained through the trade with the eagles only had a half million guaranteed. That was covered by them. This just keeps him around. We can still dump him prior to week 1 with no impact. Hell we could even include him in a trade for AB (if the steelers would take him).

The crazy thing is, Torrey is pretty much at the point that if we released him, he would be lucky if another team signed him at all.  And yet, we gave him 5M, no questions asked.

It's the panther way, apparently. We've always overvalued old vets.

The money  is not guaranteed, people. This is not hard to understand. This is the "smart" move to make, and I'd bet everything that I own that Tep feels the same way.

They won't let facts get in the way of their desire to whine.

That's my biggest issue with it Scot. If he was the #2 I'd say good deal. If he was the #3, then it's probably about right for a vet. But Smith is the #4 WR option on the team and his salary is $700K more than the #1 and #2 combined!

So this year's Safety free agent class is one the best we've ever seen. FS has been a huge need for this team since - forever. Why not use those resources and roster spot to try to bring in one of the available FS who would have a much a bigger impact on every game than the #4 WR. That $5M is probably 3/4 of what it would take to get Mathieu here.

Hopefully Newton will be healthy or all of this is likely for naught. All of it! The prudent play is to plan ahead.

If Smith's money isn't guaranteed---and looking at Over The Cap, it isn't pre or post June 1-- he still has ZERO leverage.

He has zero leverage right now too, yet we still agreed to pay him five million dollars.

No, what we did is exercise an option on a contract. We didn't "agree" to do anything, but follow the terms of the contract via exercising an option.  Five million dollars is not guaranteed at this point.

Respectfully, and as has been pointed out, we have not agreed to pay him anything. What we have done is limit his agents ability to test the market until a time of our choosing. If there is a negotiation in progress, then we hold all the cards until we need the 5mil for something else. Perhaps we get a reasonable deal and sign him. Or he makes it to camp and we cut him then. Or we need the 5mil for something else and cut him then. Seems like a good move to keep our options open.
