How many teams do you know of that are paying their number four receiver 5 million dollars?

I don't know, but I'm sure that not too many teams even have a so-called WR4 of his caliber. Furthermore, it hasn't even been established that he is our WR4. Going by one season where the QB and the WR both had injuries that directly affected the WR's play is not necessarily the wisest approach. It's shortsighted.

He was ineffective long before Newton was injured.

I don't think so. Torrey likely doesn't have much, if any, trade value.

That said, I understand the move, even as I don't like it. They are running short of receivers; Torrey is a known commodity and a vet. He's also a good presence in the locker room and the community. I would hate to go into the year relying on Wright, Moore and Samuel as my only signed receivers while trying to concentrate on filling the void at S, DL and OL.

Not endorsing, but I get it.

Now, this is a thoughtful response!

Others who fancy themselves as wise should take notes.

Still could have asked him to take a pay cut or even cut / re-signed him rather than put five million toward "veteran presence" in a year when we're short on cap.

It's not like his performance last year gave him a lot of leverage.

No disagreement here.

Didn't I read that Newton's long ball hasn't been right for a while now---like since his initial injury...? How long has it been since he has even thrown a ball over 30 yards, much less 40? Although we were winning, the entire offense, besides C-Mac was largely ineffective. It was certainly disjointed. Give the man some slack. I am sure there was a period of transition. It's like I said before, I don't believe that last season was Smith's new normal, but that's me.

Moreover, if some are correct, his money is still not guaranteed, so if he doesn't meet expectations, he can still be cut, and that's all that really matters at this point.

But Newton's going to be healthy this year, right?

The choice to cut him would have to be made by the same people who made the decision that his "veteran presence" was worth so much that it wasn't even necessary to try and get him to take a pay cut, even though he had no real leverage.

Hopefully Newton will be healthy or all of this is likely for naught. All of it! The prudent play is to plan ahead.

If Smith's money isn't guaranteed---and looking at Over The Cap, it isn't pre or post June 1-- he still has ZERO leverage.
