This isn’t Madden - Leadership matters. Experience matters. When your top two guys are younger than 22, it helps having a couple of veteran voices in that room. Not to mention on the team in general when you just lost three captains.

5:06 PM - 7 Mar 2019

Should've signed or traded for a Vet better than Smith then

Last off season

Panthers logic get rid of Steve Smith keep Torrey Smith

Some guys aren't just on the team just for football talent. you've got to have leadership to keep players together and focused playing as a team. In football coaches alone aren't going to get that done, you need voices among the players to help out. S. Smith was let go for the above reasons, while T. Smith was kept for the above reasons. really simple actually and makes sense if you know football.

You've missed it on both sides.

Steve Smith is an alpha male, commands respect, delivers results.  Torrey Smith, well, he ain't any of that...

So we have Cotch as a coach which is like a vet receiver mentor for the young guys. Why are we pretty much paying Torrey 5 mill for the same thing?

We could have let Torrey walk, cut Shaq, given TD 1 year 5 million to be the team leader we apparently lacked, all while saving around 10 million.

We are going to suck this year boys.

You know its coming. Ron loves his vets

We'll probably keep Kalil even if we draft Jonah Williams and start Kalil

Ron gave far more snaps to Moore and Samuel down the stretch then he did Smith and Funchess.

Any chance they did this to have a contract to add in a possible trade?

I don't think so. Torrey likely doesn't have much, if any, trade value.

That said, I understand the move, even as I don't like it. They are running short of receivers; Torrey is a known commodity and a vet. He's also a good presence in the locker room and the community. I would hate to go into the year relying on Wright, Moore and Samuel as my only signed receivers while trying to concentrate on filling the void at S, DL and OL.

Not endorsing, but I get it.

If I'm Torrey Smith I'm doing cartwheels out in the streets that I wasn't cut. No other team would give him that kind of money. A major home run for Torrey, and congratulations to his agent as well. $5,000,000. We don't even know if Cam will be able to throw the deep ball. Torrey must be the greatest leader who ever lived. Torrey has to be the presidential equivalent of George Washington in the locker room. Holy smokes. Didn't he have knee problems last season? Ships taking on water and we're throwing away the bilge pump? Cash is what can keep us afloat, but fug it. The 2019 season is shaping up to be a rough one. /Drama.

The coaching staff must see abilities in Torry that I'm not seeing, and I'm a random fan so I'll trust in their judgement for now.
