He also drafted Shaq and Butler to be backups in the 1st round while ignoring huge needs. He spent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks on Butler, Ealy, and Hall spending significant draft capital on the DL with very little in return, hence our current DL situation. He drafted KB and Funchess in the 1st and 2nd creating the failed twin towers experiment and neither will sign a second contract with the Panthers. While I agreed with the decisions at the time, in hindsight it looks like he chose poorly between Turner/Norwell and Star/Short on the resignings.

I think that this lacks perspective of what the climate around the team was like.

  • The season Shaq Thompson was drafted the team went 15-1, so I'm not so sure how huge needs were ignored when the team went to the Super Bowl despite losing their #1 WR that they just replaced their former #1 WR with.
  • KB was a success that was never the same after his injury. I don't put that as a failure on the ols GM the same as I don't put it on the current GM when their picks get hurt and never recover.
  • Butler was drafted the following year in case KK walked in free agency after negotiations stalled in the offseason following the SB (KK wouldn't sign until 8/2017, months after Bustler was drafted as insurance). The team had just gone 15-1 and was returning most of the same players from that squad while having not retained Kawann Short past the 2016 season.
  • Funchess was insurance in case KB was lost, and that was exactly what happened the same season that he was drafted: KB tore his ACL and was nothing like what he was. We were able to trade KB to get the #85 pick (Rashaan Gaulden) and #234 (Andre Smith). Know how much it cost to move up to get Funchess? The #89 and #201 picks. He made us back what we spent by allowing us to offload the shell of KB.
  • Also drafted Kawann Short, Star Lotulelei, and traded for Jared Allen in regards to DL investment. Plus finding Wes Horton as a UDFA and decent rotational piece. Ealy did put on a Super Bowl MVP performance that was only not recognized because of everything that was the fugery that was that game.

These weren't "luxury" picks that were ignoring huge needs. 2016 was supposed to be the return to the SB, but then Michael Oher never recovered from a concussion which resulted in Mike Remmers at LT (with DWill finally getting the consistent start to RT); the wheels fell off JStew and we ended up starting Daryl Worley after the shitshow that was the JNo franchise tag event.

Short had one poor season last year but was still named to a Pro Bowl (which is apparently a huge reason folks are screaming about not picking at #9, but that's for the other thread). Short has still been one of the best pass rushing DTs in the league, and he balled out after signing the contract despite the talks of "He'll get lazy." Turner and Norwell have been nearly equal in production, only Trai came at the cost of $45M/4yrs while Norwell is $66.5M/5yrs. I am a huge fan of Star and Norwell, but I'm looking at the numbers and we got similar production with less pay (ie: Poe's $28M/3yr vs. Star's $50M/5yr).

Lol. Salty as hell. Yeah, it was handled very badly but it was a good and necessary decision to cut him. I would imagine most players wouldn't love a GM that placed trying to win over their feelings and past accomplishments.

If he had brought in other quality receivers to replace him I would have agreed with you.  Gettleman did absolutely nothing to replace SS. So I 100% disagree with you.   If Cam didn't like SS too freaking bad.  SS showed he had plenty left in the tank in Baltimore.

He's also spot on with the firing of a GM weeks before training camp.  Obviously he had zero people skills and to be honest his talent evaluation is suspect.

TBF, you're one in a million with most of those millions trying to resell it. I wouldn't even bother with it. They've been told to avoid people without kids and most of those people now just use their kids to get the signature. Maybe he had a bad day, who knows. Can't go out just calling someone an asshole.

Nope. Steve always has been an asshole. Great player. Complete asshole.

We were in the Super Bowl a year later.

Smith never even sniffed the Super Bowl with the Ravens.

What does that have to do with replacing Smith the first year.  Gettleman didn't add much to Hurney's roster.  Couple players here and there.

My point was if you are going to release your #1 receiver shouldn't you have a viable replacement for him not so fill in?

Had we had SS we may have won the SB.

He drafted a WR who had just as good a season as SS did in Baltimore. Then he got hurt.

Then had the #1 offense and an MVP season without him.

Had we had SS, we may not have had a winning record.

That's a popular fantasy from people who haven't looked at the details.

That’s a far fetch stretch of the imagination seeing as we just went 12-4 with Smith and rifled off a 7 plus game wining streak in the process. Can argued the other way as well, had we had Smith we’d probaly win the Super Bowl in 2015

What players are being removed for Smittys salary. No Oher. No Coleman.

Smith was part of ONE winning season in his last 5 here. And we made the playoffs 3 of 4 years after him. So we may never see the SB with his “presence”
