TheDraftNetwork's PANTHERS 7-ROUND MOCK DRAFT

TheSpecialJuan

Recommended Posts

The Carolina Panthers are in the midst of a soft rebuild, continuing to hold on to head coach Ron Rivera and franchise quarterback Cam Newton. The franchise will be looking to get younger this offseason, as veteran presences Julius Peppers and Ryan Kalil retired and Thomas Davis was released.

They had clear weaknesses on their patchwork offensive line last season, and protecting Cam Newton needs to be their top priority this offseason. They have the ability at the skill positions to return to the playoffs next season, but need to get right in the trenches. They’ll likely look to those spots during the early portions of the NFL Draft.

ROUND 1, PICK 16: CLELIN FERRELL, EDGE, CLEMSON

Carolina fiished 27th in the NFL in sacks last season, and then saw future hall of famer Julius Peppers retire this offseason. This leaves a gaping hole at defensive end on the Panthers roster, a position that they should address during the NFL Draft. Clelin Ferrell provides a high floor, as he projects as a long-term starter with a balance of ability against the run and pass. There may be pass rushers with more potential available at pick 16 (such as Jachai Polite), but Ferrell will be one of the safest picks in the entire NFL Draft.

ROUND 2, PICK 47: KALEB MCGARY, OT, WASHINGTON

Carolina's offensive line was a weakness in 2018, and they’re in a unique spot entering next season. Trai Turner has been a mainstay at right guard, and he will retain that spot next season. Taylor Moton started last season at left tackle, before moving over to the right side after an injury to Daryl Williams. Matt Kalil is a high priced left tackle who missed all of 2018, and has a potential out in his contract after next season. Chris Clark filled in at left tackle, but the veteran was below average. Long-time center Ryan Kalil has announced his retirement, and one time starting left guard Amini Silatolu is an impending free agent. His replacement, Greg Van Roten was marginal at best last season.

With all of that said, it’s safe to suggest that they’ll be targeting an offensive tackle and interior offensive lineman during the NFL Draft. Kaleb McGary has been a steady presence at right tackle for multiple years at Washington, and there’s talks of him being an option for teams late in the first round. With Taylor Moton’s versatility, Carolina could look to pick the best tackle available, regardless of left or right side. ROUND 3, PICK 77: BEN POWERS, IOL, OKLAHOMA

With Silatolu as a free agent and Ryan Kalil recently retired, there is a need on Carolina’s interior offensive line. Ben Powers has a nasty streak at left guard, but took snaps at center during Senior Bowl week. With starter potential and versatility on the interior, he would be an ideal target for Carolina on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

ROUND 3, PICK 100: WILL HARRIS, S, BOSTON COLLEGE

Carolina added some intriguing undrafted options at safety last year in Rashaan Gaulden and Quin Blanding, and they’ve locked up Eric Reid for the long-term. However, they’ll will be looking for a versatile answer to supplement the potential loss of Mike Adams. Teams searching for a safety who can help cover slots, tight ends and running backs will find that guy in Will Harris. We should hear more about Harris’ stock rising after positive showing at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine.

ROUND 4, PICK 115: ANTOINE WESLEY, WR, TEXAS TECH

Devin Funchess is almost guaranteed to be leaving Carolina in free agency, leaving their wide receiver corps void of size. Antoine “Tweezy” Wesley provides that in spades, as his combination of length and flexibility gives him intriguing potential. He would make an excellent compliment to their young pass catching group of DJ Moore, Christian McCaffrey, Curtis Samuel and Ian Thomas.

ROUND 5, PICK 154: JAHLANI TAVAI, LB, HAWAII

With the release of Thomas Davis, Carolina may be looking for another body at the will linebacker spot. If they can find a player with third-down potential as a coverage man and blitzer, their linebacker group will become well-rounded. Jahlani Tavai has 16 career sacks and 41 tackles for loss, but has shown enough athleticism to be an asset in coverage as well.

ROUND 6, PICK 187: DEVINE OZIGBO, RB, NEBRASKA

While Carolina already has a stud at running back in Christian McCaffrey, his usage has been a bit aggressive. Carolina could use a compliment to McCaffrey, especially one built for power running. Ozigbo has a stout, sturdy build and enough juice to get through creases. Additionally, he has experience in how Carolina wants to incorporate their running backs in the passing game coming from the Scott Frost offensive system.

Im falling less and less in love with Ferrell.  I feel is strictly a 4-3 guy, not much Versatility

His athletic ability isnt quite as good as I originally expected (his 3 cone drill was not that good and didnt run the 40)

1. Raiders- trade up for Murray

2. SF: Takes Josh Allen

3. Jets: take Bosa

4. Cardinals: take Q Williams

5. Bucs: take Devin White

6. Giants: Jawaan Taylor

7. Jaguars: Ed Oliver

8. Detroit: Montez Sweat

9. Denver: Drew Lock

10. Buffalo: DK Metcalf

11. Bengals: Dwayne Haskins

12. GreenBay: Brian Burns

13. Miami: Garrett Bradbury

14. Atlanta: Rashan Gary

15. Washington: Greedy Williams

1st: Jonah Williams- unfortunately all the top edge rushers jump off the board.  But the last OT worth taking in the 1st is still around.  Williams is all around Solid and a Day 1 Starter at LT.  Something you can't say with any other OT in this class.  Rivera harped on the importance to protecting Cam.

2nd: Chase Winovich- Winovich would be a solid fit for the new defense.  He posted good at the combine showing he has all the abilities to be a stud.  At 6'3 256 posting a 4.59 but his 6.94 3 cone was the 2nd fastest among the edge rushers.

3rd: Juan Thornhill- Hurney and Rivera have said they want more speed.  Theyve also said that this is a deep Safety class.  Thornhill turned heads at the combine.  But once the dust settles especially in this class, he will go around here.  Remember Justin Reid last year?  Posted up good combine #s people had him going as high as the 1st but ended up being a 3rd rounder.  This Safety class rollls deep, and whats even crazier is this Safety FA class is too.  Quite a few teams will be filling their major needs at Safety in FA, the others will be drafting the top 2-3 guys.  Thornhill gets pushed right into our laps

3rd comp: Connor Mcgovern- Mcgovern is a versatile guy who can play OG or Center.  He comes in and tries to fill the hole Andrew Norwell left.  Van Roten was avg at best last year.  You just didnt hear many b!+ching abiut him because everyone was focused on the LT disaster

4th: Tyree Jackson- Jackson is another big freak like Cam.  He is the perfect guy for them to bring in and Develop.  It Maaaay be a stretch here.  But i Only expect 3 tops, QBs to go round 1.  Dont think many will go round 2.  Jackson will be atleast the 6-7th QB off the board.

5th: Mark Fields Jr- Repeat after me, you can never have too many good CBs in this new age NFL.  you can never have too many good CBs in this new age NFL.  you can never have too many good CBs in this new age NFL.  Everyone gave credit to that 2015 broncos D to that front 7 (which was impressive)  but that CB trio they had was equally impressive and deserved the same ammount of credit.  Captain absolutely Killed us last year at Nickel.  Fields has the athletic ability.  Also a legacy

6th: Elijah Holyfield- Physical bulldog rusher.  His 40 time pushed him down.  But a good compliment back to CMC.  Rivera has mentioned the depth of this RB class and the importance of a back to spare CMC some.  I fully expect them to find a RB late

If we came out of this draft with Chase as the only edge rusher acquired as a Michigan fan I would literally throw up .. Your draft would completely make me sick if it happened.. And Atlanta gets the actual good Michigan player OMG this would absolutely suck..

All depends on free agency. I expect us to sign 1 or 2 DE's but think more on the lines of Robert Quinn or Vinny Curry types.

I don't care Chase sucks.. I've watch this dude play the lunch pal guy role and never step up when we need him for years now.  You just wasted a 2nd round pick on a fake no talent Clay Matthews wanna be.. He sucks..
