Report: Contract talks between Panthers, Daryl Williams stall

There are a LOT of Panthers fans in support of paying this guy an additional $7M this season instead of making him a post-June 1st cut and clearing up $7.25M in cap space. A large chunk of this fanbase has seemingly moved past the point of numbness to watching the Panthers make baffling roster moves and have moved into full on Stockholm Syndrome territory in defending them.

In fairness, who do we pick up to play LT for under $7.25M that is an upgrade?

Is it Moton (insert the answer is already on the roster) to slide to LT?  Do we know if he can be a starting LT?  He was a great RT last year as a full time starter.  Do you pay Williams (who was one of the most "helped" RTs two years ago) $11 million and pray Moton is the answer at LT?

To me, this becomes a career definer for Hurney.  If he makes the wrong choice, you know he's going to get fired.  You HAVE to protect Cam.  I don't have time to analyze everyone's snaps and stats.  I can't tell you if Moton can take on the best edge rushers in the league and have more success than Kalil did.  I'm not trying to change your mind about Kalil.

But are there any other options for the cost savings we'd have on Matt?

All of this would be relevant if A) Kalil was actually a good LT and B) if Kalil wasn't really injury prone. Unfortunately, neither A nor B is true.

Everyone is an option. We replaced his level of play for 800k last year. With a guy who was watching games from his couch week 1. Last thing I’m worried about is someone playing worse than Kalil.

Per LaCanfora:

The Bills and Giants will be in pursuit of Panthers tackle Daryl Williams, I'm told, and his price has soared above where the Panthers are likely able to match.

Joseph Person of TheAthletic.com reports that the talks have stalled and Williams is expected to hit the open market when the new league year opens on March 13. He’ll be able to start hearing from teams other than the Panthers on March 11.

If the Bills and Giants (the two franchises with the best knowledge of DW outside of the Panthers) pursue DW, that most certainly shoots all to hell this narrative of DW being overrated.
