If Torrey Smith comes back at his current salary I will be very disappointed

I dont want Smith at the vet minimum. Panthers seem to let young talent sit on the bench instead of getting valuable playing time no matter how bad the Vet is playing

Bunny trail. So are you in favor of loyalty to players even if it isn't a good move for the team.

That’s easy. I don’t care about player feelings one bit. They get paid for this. Not when they’re here, and not when they leave. Even if CJ wanted to leave I would have told him play or we’ll tell every team you refused to play. Not that it happened like that, but just making a point. And I would have cut Torrey after camp and offered him 2M. Take it or leave it. My views are consistent. Now.........

Why am I answering these questions? I’m not the one making excuses out of both sides of my mouth. All the “treat with respect” crap and excuses made for moves like CJ(wanna see where you say the exact opposite) And now it’s screw Torrey, team first. That’s awful convenient. And typical.

First of all this is a reporter not a team statement. Second, why would they say they would cut anyone at their convenience versus keeping them around in public. You don't air your business in public and the Panthers have always been close-lipped about negotiations. Lastly maybe they do want him now but things change as free agency and the draft are fluid events. Based on the present we might want him but might change our mind based on what happens in free agency.

I am surprised you can't follow that simple logic. You seem to dig in after you say something and refuse to see logic even when it is obvious and pretty simple. Teams cut players in free agency and after the draft all the time if they get better options. You always bitch about the team being loyal to players unnecessarily and now have flipped and think we should be loyal to Torrey no matter what. Which is it?

Are you really that DENSE to think I actually believe there would ever be a “cut for convenience” article. You have somehow made that your version of things. It’s making a point?

Fact: Everyone in this thread is responding to what a team reporter said.

Yet you have a completely different, but you better believe “a make the team look better version”. Right now, Smith is on the team. So we get to complain about it. When he’s gone, it will stop.

Just like you complain every day about any slight criticism of the FO/HC...OC(LOL) people are tired of being attacked for any such statements. Not that you would ever look in that self-righteous mirror for the truth.

And where did I say loyal to Torrey? I said it helps him and us. It’s not like we paid money to see him leave like CJ. Why the wait? Are you going to really say that between now and game 1, there is a scenario(that doesn’t involve a radioactive spider) where Smith is worth 5M. Because if no, why even consider him being on the team. Which is exactly why this article is alarming. Him being cut should be a formality.

Once again, is it “do a solid for CJ” or screw Torrey? Which side of the mouth is gonna deflect this one away from the issue

You seem to go around in circles.  You complain because we didn't already cut him before free agency starts and somehow think if we do it later if circumstances change that we are screwing him?  You are over reacting to an article by a reporter who indicated that we are considering keeping him.  Rather than wait it out to see what happens you go off the deep end complaining and then go down bunny trails and insult anyone who points out the simple logic in keeping all of our options open until we have a reason to make a move.  So yeah I think you are dense enough to  believe her article is fact otherwise why the extreme over reaction

Then have some convoluted logic that because we worked with CJ we have to do the same for Torrey or somehow that is screwing him over. Total nonsequitor.

Let's be clear. No one said we are stringing Torrey along or screwing him. Simply we are keeping who we have until we get someone better. If we get an opportunity to draft a top receiver in the third round for example, then maybe Smith is expendible. Maybe not

So are we screwing players we bring to camp and then have to release them? Do we have to solidify all of our moves before free agency starts because changing our mind down the road is cruel in your opinion. You are all over the place having an emotional meltdown which is likely more due to discussing this with me than anything to do with Torrey.   When your meltdown gets called, you double down and go off on posters who  point the overblown reactions  You seem too irrational for a calm discussion so let me bow out so you can return to semblence of rationality.

So, to sum up that mess. We should never, ever discuss anything bad until it actually happens. Can’t comment on direct statements from team reporters. Can’t complain about a team with a losing record and holes everywear.

Just post Go Panthers every 5 minutes. We can call it the 55 forum and everything is sunshine and unicorns.

Circles? That’s all a conversation with you is. I told you why I don’t care about players, cutting Torrey doesn’t hurt the team. CJ did. So I really don’t care when they cut him. Just so the money is used in FA. And as you again avoided, do you really expect him to be worth 5M somehow? So what’s the point of keeping him? Any reason at all. And where you defended CJ move that hurt the team, now suddenly it’s team first. At this point you’re just making it up as you go along.

I rather cut Torrey and pay Funchess 9M to come back for one year. At least Funchess can be active on game day.

Like seriously? Torrey is the guy who caught a total of 17 rec for 190 yd. OMFG

Almost $300k per catch. Over $26k per yard. $2.5M per TD.

Just horrific ROI.

I can’t believe the echo chamber some of you have fallen into with the Torrey Smith hate. Dude is a good addition to the team. Is he worth the $5mm? Probably not. But y’all act like he didn’t give it his all before he got hurt. Dude was the only player not named Trai Turner that would stand up for the BS hits Cam put up with from other team

This is actually indicative of the problem.

When you ask the question of whether he's worth five million a season, the answer isn't "no, but"; it's just "no".

Technically it's okay for a fan to let their feelings come into play with this sort of judgment, but when a head coach or a GM does so, it's bad... really bad.

You don't build winning teams using logic like "no, he isn't really worth that much but let's pay it to him anyway because he's a nice guy and we like him".

if you can't make those decisions without emotion, you shouldn't be making them at all.

In Torrey's defense, it's hard to be at your best when you are a fast, way way way downfield receiver and your QB can't get the ball out past 15 yards. We kept wondering why they were using him on short passing routes until we found out that was all Cam could throw.

Just like Funchess, it's foolish to judge a WRs abilities in a season where the QB can't really throw the ball. No one was able to operate in their best roles last season.

If Torrey does stay another season, I think we'll see much better results from him if Cam's arm can make a comeback.
