Jourdan Rodrigue does not believe we are getting rid of Tory Smith

Agree with MHS. No need to do anything with Smith until we see how things play out. We don't know if we are going to pay him 5 million until we see our other options which we won't know until free agency is underway and we have the draft. Cutting players early is a courtesy to help them get on with another team, but isn't always best for the team unless like Funchess they don't want him at all.

Shocking!!!!

If you’re going to cut him, why wait. If he’s not worth 5M today, or in the future, why are you keeping him. It would actually be cruel to Torrey. He would much rather be a FA now. Just let him go. Nothing else makes sense if you’re not keeping him.

Sure. Cap room after the draft is very valuable. Remember when we got that Josh Norman money back. Sure helped when everyone was signed already.

Let's not go there unless we want another great debate about how boneheaded rescinding the franchise tag was sending and then putting all your eggs in two rookies basket. And he was rescinded before the draft not after. Plus Tillman was retiring and Benwikere was coming off injury.  It wasn't one position to replace but several.

We just said that we won't know if he is worth 5 million until we see what else is out there. Last year WRs in free agency were overpaid so the 5 million was a deal. It may not be this year. This is about doing what is right for the Panthers not Smith.

Way to completely miss the point. It’s about cap room at that point not being useful. You know. Something relevant to the topic. Not another classic deflection.

What does one word of that have to do with this?

I knew something was up when the new WR coach mentioned him. I echo others, no issue with him being on the squad at a lower number.

You could easily sign him to a new deal. Convert his 5 million into a signing bonus at 3-4 years, would put his cap around 2 million per.

You miss the point, we have plenty of cap room until we decide who we are going to sign. Until then we can ride with who we have. If we want to sign a player and need cap room then we can release someone or restructure. You seem to be the one going off on tangents because the Panthers don't do what you want.

Really. Let’s talk about the CJ Anderson situation from the what’s best for the Panthers point of view. I thought the company line was doing a favor for CJ. Because it made us worse and cost money. I distinctly remember you defending that. So which is it?

Why did we need to pay 5M for any WR? That FA market wasn’t like that after preseason. After that he would have been lucky to get 2M. Which is when you cut him. When the team has the leverage. So what prevented us from doing that? If he walks, WR 4 aren’t hard to find. On a team that rarely employs 4 WRs. Ever.

I’m responding to a report that “they want to keep around” not a report of “ cut at their convenience”. When that story comes out, you will have a point. But this report implies he will be a part of the team.

You are the one assuming with the hope the people you have so much faith in aren’t as stupid as their resumes say. I just reacted to what is written.

And I still want to hear why we should screw Torrey but do a solid for CJ Anderson?

Bunny trail. So are you in favor of loyalty to players even if it isn't a good move for the team.

First of all this is a reporter not a team statement. Second, why would they say they would cut anyone at their convenience versus keeping them around in public. You don't air your business in public and the Panthers have always been close-lipped about negotiations. Lastly maybe they do want him now but things change as free agency and the draft are fluid events. Based on the present we might want him but might change our mind based on what happens in free agency.

I am surprised you can't follow that simple logic. You seem to dig in after you say something and refuse to see logic even when it is obvious and pretty simple. Teams cut players in free agency and after the draft all the time if they get better options. You always bitch about the team being loyal to players unnecessarily and now have flipped and think we should be loyal to Torrey no matter what. Which is it?

One would assume it would be an easy way to free up 5 million for a cap strapped team, however we do need insurance/vet leader in case DJ or Samuel goes down. We will have to see the contracts coming up in free agency to see if that’s a good decision or not. Thoughts?

I would not be shocked to see the Marty/Ron Keystone Kop Show give him an extension and a raise.

Wouldn't be surprised even a little bitty bit.
