Jourdan Rodrigue does not believe we are getting rid of Tory Smith

Some threads are very accurate IQ tests. This is definitely one.

Not really--some people are basing their opinions on last year while others are wondering about his potential this year.  Both have merit.

People who want him cut are basing it on last season's stats.  (Personally,  I want him cut, but he can be cut any time, so it would be stupid to do so in our current situation).  We do not know how different he would  be with a healthy  Cam; if any  player was impacted more by Cam's injury than Cam,  it is Smith.  We have 3 WRs in my "core"--Moore, Samuel,  and Wright.  We are going to need five. I think this is a good year for WRs in  the draft--and I could go with a fourth WR from the fourth or fifth round and feel good about it.

As for the locker room presence?  We cut an NFL Man of the Year who can still play.

What if we wanted to cut him before last season? When are you planning on cutting him? June when we can’t spend the money? The idea of paying any 4th WR close to 5M is ridiculous.

I saw the part where Rodrigue said the Panthers like Smith and would welcome him back.

I missed the part where they said they would definitely pay him $5M for the experience. Let's see how this plays out. I have to believe he will be cut and re-signed to a lesser contract.

.  You can cut him during or after free agency---once you know other needs are met.  If you sign a C, T, and a S, for example, you can now cut Smith and draft a WR.  However, if you are not sure you can draft a WR because we met no needs  in free agency, you wait until after the draft and use the $5m toward rookie contracts.

There is a deadline. March 13th. Vested veteran salaries are guaranteed after that date.

We have to make the call on any vested veterans we may be thinking of making salary cap casualties by that date.

Link? Everything I’ve read says Vested Veteran salaries are fully guaranteed if they’re on the roster for the first game of the season...

That would be fine if the team reporter wasn’t wondering if we were cutting him at all. Kalils money is paying for the draft. There is no reason to hold a player that you will never pay 5M for this year. Or shouldn’t at least. I don’t care who we draft  or sign, he not being kept if we have any sense whatsoever

Exactly. This sky is falling reaction is typically huddle hysteria. You can cut Smith anytime you need to. No need to cut him until free agency is underway. We might wait until after the draft to decide.

Agree with MHS. No need to do anything with Smith until we see how things play out. We don't know if we are going to pay him 5 million until we see our other options which we won't know until free agency is underway and we have the draft. Cutting players early is a courtesy to help them get on with another team, but isn't always best for the team unless like Funchess they don't want him at all.

Sure. Cap room after the draft is very valuable. Remember when we got that Josh Norman money back. Sure helped when everyone was signed already.
