Yeah, 2.6 percent of the salary cap for a guy who takes up 1.9 percent of a roster alongside two WRs on cheap rookie deals is just exorbitant. Or something.

10:31 AM - 6 Mar 2019

That's an idiotic way of looking at it. Forget the total salary cap, look at available salary cap. Smith may only account for 2.6% of our total salary cap, but we can increase our available salary cap by 28.6% by waiving him right now. $17.5M to $22.5M in the stroke of a pen.

He signed a 3 year deal with Philly.  He played 1 season there, they realized he can't play football any longer, and traded him to get 5M off the books.  Of course we jumped all over that...because it's a terrible football move, and we are the Panthers.

So he was under contract for us last season and this upcoming.  At least last season we were somewhat stuck with him because of his dead cap number, but this year there is nothing holding us back from forcing a pay cut, or cutting him outright with zero dead cap.

TLDR:  We are a dumb team right now.

There wasn’t a dead cap hit last year either.

Russel Shepard had the same exact number of receptions and he was at least a good special teamer. We said he was garbage and it worth it and that’s true and yet we want to give Smith $5m?

If we keep Smith and Kalil, then we are stupid and we again are wasting yet another year of Cam and Luke. Add in Searcy and that’s $15m of cap space.

Oh, let’s make sure we have Smith and Kalil just in case instead of signing Trey Flowers or signing Mathieu and Paradis. JFC, if we don’t cut them then I just won’t care at all but I will tell all those Hurney 2.0/Ron’s top 10 to fug themselves.

Even.  Flipping.  Worse.

For some reason I thought he did carry some dead cap last season....good lord we are poorly run.

I ranted several times after preseason. Release and resign. Easy call.

pfft. I don't believe it one bit.

$5 Million dollars? He's gone.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt it. Seems like we've already made our salary cap casualty moves. Looks like we'll be carrying Smith, Searcy, and Kalil again. We could nearly double our available cap space with three no-brainer roster moves. $17.5M to $31.6M.

He caught 17 of 31 targets for 190 yards and 2 TDs in 6 starts and 11 total games. $5M? GTFO...

You can get that type of production out of an off the street JAG. Sorry, being a nice guy in the lockerroom isn't worth $5M.

Hey, I would  cut  him based on last year, but we are paying him for this year,  He was brought  in to be the Ted  Ginn deep threat  WR--the  qb  said he  could  not throw the ball 30 yards for half a season--you really can't use stats to criticize him under those circumstances.

When the D knew Cam  was limited, Torrey sat.  His game was shut down.
