Jourdan Rodrigue does not believe we are getting rid of Tory Smith

There's no point in letting him go until we find another WR who could play outside in case of injury.

And I know people love Samuel and everything, and I do too, but he only has half a season of work and hasn't been healthy for a full 16 game season yet.  The smart move is to keep Torrey Smith until we find another outside receiver we can groom.

Relax, guys.

Not at $5M. We have all the leverage. Use it. Organizations that are successful year in and year out do that. Feel good organizations like the Panthers don't and that's a big reason why we can't string together winning seasons.

The more we see from Tepper, the more he looks like JR minus the creepiness (well, hopefully).

The Eagles were going to cut him last year before we traded for him. Coming off a SB and a decent season. Yet we are going to keep him....TWICE. And after an injury-filled season.

And guess what?  They had absolutely no depth at WR, nobody that could play outside, and it forced them to trade a 3rd round pick for Golden Tate, who probably won't even re-sign with them.

But lets keep the narrative that the Panthers are just sooooo dumb and act like the Eagles were so smart.

It's insurance.  Relax.  Free agency and the draft haven't even happened yet.

OR...

He could have had a bad year because Cam lost the deep ball....

I do not think we need to assume any decisions are made before free agency  and the draft.  If they add a WR in  the draft, that $5m starts looking like a lot.

But if we can clear that $5M at any time, then what is the point of cutting him now until we get another receiver?

It isn't like there is a deadline.  We can shed it at any time.  It literally wouldn't make any sense to release him now until we get more WR depth.

There is a deadline. March 13th. Vested veteran salaries are guaranteed after that date.

We have to make the call on any vested veterans we may be thinking of making salary cap casualties by that date.

Insurance? You don’t spend 5M on insurance? We let go of CJ Anderson when he was our only “insurance” for CMC. At 1.7M. So it ain’t that.

And we need the money now,  Not after the draft. It’s useless then. Aging, injured and unproductive WRs don’t get 5M/yr. Seriously, if he were a FA, would you give him 5M for this year?

No, it's not.

Free up the cash now, before free agency, and help address the needs with said cash.

He caught 17 of 31 targets for 190 yards and 2 TDs in 6 starts and 11 total games. $5M? GTFO...

You can get that type of production out of an off the street JAG. Sorry, being a nice guy in the lockerroom isn't worth $5M.

I absolutely have to stop caring about what this franchise does.

Shouldn't have traded for him last year, but we did....then we carried him on the roster...which we shouldn't have...but we did...now we are likely carrying him again with zero dead money...at that price?

Simply stunning.

Gotta remember, it's Hurney.

Aw shucks guys, with no more TD, Ryan Kalil, Adams, and Peppers, we need that locker room leader with the warm and fuzzies, golly jeez.  Pay him whatever he wants because he’s nice to rookies and smiles a lot.

    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
