Panthers bringing back Brian Cox JR

Another piece for multiple fronts. He came back very cheap I assume

”The Panthers are looking for as many pass-rushers as they can find this offseason, and they’ve started with keeping a few of their own projects.

Wednesday, they retrained the rights to defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. but tendering him a contract.

Cox (the son of the former Pro Bowl linebacker) was an exclusive rights free agent, which means not really a free agent at all since other teams couldn’t sign him unless the Panthers didn’t want him.

Cox has played 18 games and doesn’t have a sack. The Panthers are expected to experiment with some different fronts this year, and they’re looking for rushers with the ability to play in three- or four-man fronts.”

Hopefully just a camp body. It's not a good thing when guys like him make your 53 unless he becomes a standout on special teams.

Reading what Rivera said about him, they are looking for him to step up. He could have a larger role on this defense with the multi front looks.

As sad as it is, We must have someone like him step up. Even with a FA and draft pick we have no proven depth. I assume they will let him, Haynes, and Obada battle it out for the last spot

Exclusive Rights FAs are easy signings but he's a JAG probably scraping for a depth spot and one of the first ones in trouble after free agency and the draft.  Maybe he'll knock Horton into free agency and find a role reducing inside on pass rushing downs.

Hey, I hope he does. I root for all of our guys. If I'm not high on them then I hope they prove me wrong.

Horton is a free agent and from what it looks like they want Cox to replace Horton for a lower cap hit and about 4 years younger.  Which let's face it is not asking a whole lot of Cox.

Felt like this should be obvious but this move does NOT mean Carolina won’t target a prolific EDGE in the draft. Cox JR has improved each year and fits in to plans for depth as they continue to try to increase vertical (interior) pressure, as they did for last 6 wks of 2018.

Have heard some talk about him as a DT/DE recently, this might suggest that the Panthers are going to let Horton test the market.
