Daryl Williams and the franchise tag

Too many guys get a big contract after one good season, only to fall off a cliff in production. KK Short is a fine example of this. The fact that Williams' banner year has a year lost to injury between it and now isn't a good thing. I'd offer a good one year prove it contract with an option to extend.

Tampa just gave Donovan Smith a 3yr/41.25M with 27M guaranteed. Avg of 13.75M a year. Thats less than the franchise tag. I dont see Daryl being the tackle Smith is too. Now, I would consider offering Daryl a 10M a year offer. He’d be smart to take.

I poo'ed you for the mere suggestion of taking Kalil over Williams. You are out of your damn mind.

Well, fug. Hope we're making the right call on this one.

Would never franchise a guy who is coming off a significant injury the year before. He really doesn’t have a huge sample size that dictates he should make top OL money. If I’m Hurney I offer him a prove it deal and let him walk if he declines.

Have to wonder if the Panthers know something the other teams don't. The Panthers haven't been shy about backing up the truck for players they deem to be part of the core group. Couple that with the fact that the Panthers know they need to address the OLine and it makes you think the Panthers just weren't that high on Williams.

Not sure I would agree with that provided you had, say, Colts, Texans level cap space this year. Franchise price wouldn't make much of an impact and you would get a look at the player in question for one year.

If he played LT I would, but with the way the OL franchise tag is structured LT is really the only OL position that warrants the use of the tag. You'll end up paying any OL the average of the five highest paid LTs in the league if you use the tag on them.

If he is gonna end up getting a big contract, you probably have to pass. With the injury and considering our lack of cap space.

Not really concerned woth cap to he honest. You can structure contracts are it. To me, it all comes down to that knee and since we're the team that has handled the entire rehab process we're in the best position to make that call.

Again, I just hope we're making the right call. We've struggled mightily to field competent OTs ever since Gross retired. We're going to to look like buffoons if DW walks and becomes a perennial All-Pro elsewhere while we likely continue to trot out warm bodies at OT.
