We will lose out on 2-3 better DE prospects by falling 7 spots and in general more options.

Do you give that up for a win vs. third string Saints?

The logical answer is fug no. The emotional fan wanting to feel good about something says yes.

Payton wasn’t going to win that game, he knows he jabbed us and knows as a coach it’d be hard for Rivera, a do the right thing coach ala anti Payton anti bellicheck, to tell guys fighting for a job to basically lose. And I can agree with that part.

But in the end let’s recognize this and the fact that remains, it would have helped to lose that game instead of some feel good, it doesn’t matter where we draft-it’s al the same bullshit. I’ll take a consolation prize since as stated...we already tanked at that point.

Again you guys complaining don't have a clue if you think any coach or the players would tank a game in the NFL. No one is arguing 9 isn't better than 16 because you have more options. But history shows that you can find quality guys at either position.  But again tanking the game wasn't an option and no one does it. Why are you so dense you don't know that?

In the final analysis drafting mid round rather than 7 or 8 spots earlier doesn't have nearly as much impact as making wise decisions once your turn arrives to pick.

The Patriots have been one of the final teams to draft each round over the last decade and yet they consistently have double digit wins and numerous playoff/Super Bowl victories to show for it.

IMHO, Hurney and Rivera have a lot more to do with the Panthers inability to consistently field a winning team than our draft position does.

Been getting a lot of hate for my stance on Ferrell. Fact is have you really heard anyone clamouring sayin he’s a cant miss prospect? He’s just a guy. This mock has him falling to 24 and at that point I would be fine with him. He isn’t going to revolutionize the pass rush and that’s what we need. Our best rusher is 31 and then there is no one. I don’t want a average guy for that job.

Sweat has the potential to change the Pass Rush game for the panthers.. I think at where we are picking the best we can hope for is Sweat but chances are he isn’t there but, I’m prepared to move up slightly to ensure that future. If not then I don’t settle for the 4th-5th best edge in the first. I go get the best Tackle guard or Corner.

I generally agree with you about any DE not named Sweat. I'm not sold that Ferrell is a legit game changer.

Generally, I still believe that the BPA is the way to go in the first. I just can't see taking an inferior player at one position just to fill a need and leaving a greater talent on the board at another. Things would have to be very close.

Some on this board, for over a decade, have lost their collective minds hoping we draft a solid DE or EDGE in the first.

Anyone remember Derrick Harvey?

If it plays out like this:

You take Oliver and never look back.

He's a game changer. Nobody else on that list is.

I actually think Bradbury is the "safest" pick, but yeah, Oliver is second and definitely more of a game changer. That pick wouldn't hurt my feelings at all...once I got over the initial "What the fug do you mean we didn't pick a pass rusher or LT?!?!?!? " tirade.

What's the big deal about sweat? No one was talking about him even when I watched college football. All of a sudden everyone wants this guy?

Everyone is obsessed with speed, and he's really fast for an OLB/EDGE/DE.

I've never been a real fan of the 40 yard dash metric, tbqh. I mean, in a game situation, there isn't much difference in a 4.4 guy and a 4.6 guy, depending on how well the player positions themselves, cuts, etc.

I'm not buying the Sweat hype tbqh. That is especially so around these parts, where people have been salivating about us drafting the next Peppers for a long time. It ain't happening.

John Ross was fast too, and look how that has worked out.

We move back 7 spots in every round, not just the 1st.

At the end of the day, we lost the cumulative draft pick value of an early 2nd round pick for nothing in return.

The further you get away from the first round, the more difficult that it becomes to distinguish potential hits from the misses. The fact is, just like I said before, draft value on someone's chart is speculative. It is a contrived way to get as many picks as you can in order to get as many darts to hit the bullseye.  It isn't is a crystal ball. Seven spots is hardly worth crying over, especially when it's based upon intentionally losing a game---full of pride-filled professionals---which was never going to happen.

The notion of intentionally tanking a game has everything to do with the wind-filled wings of fantasy, and is never based in reality.

The fact is, it appears we'll be in a great position with the possibility of drafting a player who could be as impactful as any player in the draft. And that's what the intellectually honest have been saying from the get-go.

Sweat was moving up draft boards since the senior bowl where he wrecked tackles in practice and was generally the best player at the senior bowl. this was before his 40. he was pushing top 10 then...

And exactly what was going to realistically change our draft position?

Ahhhh, that's it, maybe we should have just forfeited the game and gone to Bourbon Street and had gumbo and a few brews.

I understand that, but his combine performance has really made people lose their minds over him.

He's no Clowney. He's no Peppers. He's no Garrett.

Will he be a solid starting DE/Edge guy in the NFL. For sure. Is he a real game changer? I have my doubts.

I could be wrong, and that is fine. But I've seen it too many times over the years where people get so enamored by certain players that they overlook the realities of the actual game changers sitting there on the board.

Thankfully, someone will draft Sweat before we even get on the clock. That way, we can focus on getting a quality OL guy, Devin White, Ed Oliver, or another player that will be better for us in the long run.

That's what you pay coaches to do. There are very few rookie players who come in ready to play at an All-Pro level.

He would need a LOT of coaching to be a day 1 starter.  I would not take him at 16 at all.
