Some notes from my source involving the NFL draft

If we go OL at 16 I'll be pissed. I dont see a dominant LT and none of the guards are top 16 guys: trade back in the first if we want a guard. There are plenty of DL available who are still top 16 players.

What is wrong with Dillard? I was a skeptic at first two but the dude is a hell of an athlete and played a poo ton of snaps in pass protection as a LT in college. Most of his problems are correctable: hand placement which can be corrected with coaching and strength in the run game- NFL diet and strength and conditioning coaching.

Now all that being said Dillard is almost certainly going to go before our pick

Have you not seen the plays highlighted in all these threads? I was amazed when people said he looked good at the Senior Bowl. He gave up a strip sack and almost got Grier killed and had to have TE help a ton. He got beat in practice but I think his quick feet/athleticism have people drooling which is why his combine results have him rated high. That play where the 200 pound safety than many of us wanted last draft pancaked him shows his lack of NFL power and balance.

He played PAC 12 defenses in an offense that makes him look good. I’m really concerned he will be a big but that people think can be easily molded.

I just keep seeing Cedric Ogbuehi when watching Dillard. His strength and anchor issues were supposedly fixable with technique changes. But he didn’t have the core strength and got steamrolled from day one.

Someone brought up Edoga(USC) earlier and I mentioned I thought he had potential. Curious as to what you think about him? I noticed his footwork and technique during Sr. Bowl and after watching a couple games, there might be something there. Didn’t get to see practices and thought you may have caught some of him.

Yes he has quick feet.

So did John Ross, thus the reason he went so high too.  Because some people just love athletic ability.

But

1. He has Never run blocked

2. His offense at WSU, the OL were more spread out OTs played in 2 point stance vs a 3 point stance like pro

3. The Offense he played in, was full out spread, spreading put the defenses.  So rarely saw more than 3 to 4 man rushes. (Matt Kalil had some success vs prevent defenses only rushing 3 sometimes.  That doesnt make him a stud)

4. The offense he was in pretty mich required him to just get up and get in someones way, which generally was 2 seconds tops with that offense throwing a lot of short quick passes

5. The talent level he faced was atrocious.  He hasnt faced a edge rusher that will go in the top 3-4 rounds of the draft.

6. When the pads came on and he faced competition to prove to everyone at the all star game.  He got bullied around.  Thus the reason you always saw his stock climb and peak were the basic drills and non live drills at senior bowl week and the combine.  Or gym short hero times. Great athlete but going to need a ton of work.  Joe Marino at the draftnetwork said while he has upside, he is one of the riskiest players in this draft.  And will have a steep learning curve that cluld even mean requiring a redshirt year

Verge looks to be right on Little, latest mocks have him going somewhere between 16 and 20.

Everrett Brown 2.0

Just like the thread on here.  Drafting for needs get you fired.  It got Hurney fired before and he said he learned from his lessons before.  Tonight will prove if he really did

Stay away from Little. Never got better in college and frankly never lived up to his billing. Saw him several times and wasn't really that impressed. Having said that, I dont like any of the LT this year.

Give me Jonah Williams (kids a stud)

Or Ford (can play OT or OG so versatility is key here)

If we go OL in rd 1.  Everyone else, will not feel good

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
