Some notes from my source involving the NFL draft

Well what do you define as "immediate impact?" If you can define some benchmark stats(sacks, QB rushes, games started, tackles, forced fumbles, etc, etc, etc) then I can put up a list. Do you want to limit it to the first round or basically 16th through end of draft? How many years do you want to go back?

I was just thinking pressures, starts, sacks, TFL....and I think we should stick with this era...so maybe over the last 10 years?

I don't think for a second that Ron is actually going to mix things up with 4/3 and 3/4....so I didn't really want to include pass rushing LB's that really wouldn't fit our scheme...really just hands in the dirt DE's.

Maybe even through the 2nd round as well.  I'll start looking into it as well today.

Pressure might be hard to come by. Is there a good source for individual QB pressure information that isn't behind a paywall?

Yea, its gonna be hard.  May be easier to just list the DE's that have gone in the 1st and 2nd after 15, and see how they stack up.

I may just start a new thread real quick on it, and see what everyone thinks.

I could use Pro Football References AV(Approximate Value) metric and base it all on whether they had equal to or above the average for top 15 DE's over that 10 year period. That might be a clean way to do it, although using a metric instead of raw stats.

It can’t be many. Only one that sticks out is Carl Lawson and that’s only because he should be on our team along with Eddie Jackson instead of the ghost of Dashawn Hall.

Dove too deep. Lawson is a 4th. So he’s out.

Just posted the names in it's own thread.

I didn't go back and break down size of the player, or the stats.  Just the names to see how many hits there are vs. misses.

I haven't even looked it over really well yet, but it's not that pretty just from the feeling I got typing the names out.

I am working on a spreadsheet now. I will add it to your thread. Also, I am only basing this on Pro-Football-Reference listings. If they are listed as a DE or a DE/OLB, I included them.

Thanks.  Looking through the names....and I haven't even really broken it all down yet...but it ain't pretty so far.  At least not when you are talking about impact player vs. ALL the misses.

This draft could be different as it's very heavy at a few different positions, but man....that list of names makes me nervous as hell.

If anyone is interested, we collaborated on a way too early mock top 10 draft without trades:

1. ARI: Kyler Murray, QB, OKL
2. SF: Quinnen Williams, DL, ALA
3. NYJ (Trade up spot for a qb): Nick Bosa, DE, OHST
4. OAK: Josh Allen, DE, KEN
5. TB: Montez Sweat, DE, MSST
6. NYG: Daniel Jones, QB, DUKE
7. JAX: DK Metcalf, WR, OLM
8. DET: Rashan Gary, DE, MICH (Heard they like Ed Oliver a lot too)
9. BUF: Jawaan Taylor, T, FLO
10. DEN: Andre Dillard, T, WS

16. CAR: Garret Bradbury, C, NCST

  • 3 weeks later...

We haven't been talking much as he has obviously been pretty busy, but here are some tidbits I've been able to squeak out:
He is expecting Haskins to fall out of the top 5

There is some serious hype around Hakeem Butler, and he is expecting him to compete to be the second/third receiver off the board

Daniel Jones pro day solidified his grade as QB2 in the draft, though some have Lock rated higher

To go along with that, there are teams out there that have a crazy grade on Lock, and he thinks teams may be eager to jump way up to get him

One you guys probably already know, Brian Burns to Carolina is making a lot of noise within the scouting circle, though he said he still thinks they will go o-line or defensive tackle in the first, thought it contradicts his earlier statement about them not really being all in on edge in the first

Josh Jacobs has a grade similar to Ezekiel Elliot, and will not drop to 20 or lower

Chargers are showing their hand with Ryan Finley and he expects them to trade up for him

Will Grier is gaining momentum from a 6th round pick to what looks like possibly a 3rd round or earlier guy, blew teams away with his game knowledge

Devin White is gaining steam as a trade up target early in the first round

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
