2019 Salary Cap

Raleigh PF

If we do not  re-sign Williams and Funchess, we could=

Restructure Thompson to about $5m (from $9m)....$4m

Cut Torrey Smith..........................................................$5m

That gives us $26m to spend entirely on free agents without having to reserve any for rookies (see below).

A Center (about $7m) and a G (about $5m) and a Safety (about $7m) and a DT (about $7m)

Cut Matt Kalil (post June 1 and use to sign rookies)

Everybody talking about cutting Kalil, I think Thompson is the guy we should watch out for. Ron didn't mention him much in his combine interview. I think that 9 mil is enticing to have in the open market. We could get a better player with that money.

If that was the case why let TD walk so easily?  The LB’s in this draft are not that outstanding.

Why would Thompson agree to such a thing?

Why arent we doing it now then?

Because the only candidates are really KK and Cam.

With KKs, you don’t want to kick that money down the road because he’s a candidate to be cut next year if he doesn’t pick his game back up.

Now Cam, I would actually do it. You can easily get an extra 7M for this year. He’s either signing a new contract after this year, or he’s probably gone or hurt. Either way, his dead cap won’t matter. You either roll it into his huge contract, or you’re in rebuild mode anyway.

We did it with Luke at the trade deadline last year.

Yeah, don’t want to do it with Short. There was a post June 1st scenario I looked at with him. Lots of savings but about the same as Poe and I’d rather have Short for another year more than Poe.

I distinctly remember that. It was a part of my thought process.

I have a plan for Poe too.

There is plenty of money to go after the players I mentioned. We are nowhere near as strapped as people believe.

If we have to go Wilkins or Lawrence (love him for NT), I wont be mad, but I sure as shot dump Poe and he’d open another $7. That would put us at $35m after rookies. That’s enough for Flowers and Mathieu with $10-15m left over to roll over. We could go DT in 1st, C/G (McCoy, Jenkins, Lindstrom and others) in 2nd, T double up in 3rd and 4th/5th. Another DE prospect in there and a nickel CB and whatever else and I think we’d be in good shape.

Another huge factor that people forget is the first year cap hits will not be anywhere near the avg/yr value. You could get Brown for 8M, Smith for 7M, Morse and Amos for 6M. Plus all would have reasonable cap hits next year. Guarantee the first two years.

I’d restructure Cam(if/when) first and then if the draft got us help at DT, cut Poe and use his money for the season. Kalil pays the draft. Spend the rest.
