I'm fine with Williams, as long as it's not a Charles Johnson kinda contract.

Spend the rest on a top-notch DE and kick the tires on a depth DT maybe. Do the rest of our damage in the draft. Still need a QB2, but who knows where this franchise is planning to go there.

I have a feeling Williams is going to test the market first.   I don't know if we offered him a contract but it seems to me something should have been done by now if we were going to keep him.

Maybe we low balled him and he thinks he'll get more elsewhere.

I’d be inclined to move on from Thompson and spend that money on KJ Wright. Or possibly find a player like Deon Bucannon for less. I hope he proves me wrong but I’m not sold on Thompson. Especially for $9M.

I thought about Wright. Always thought he was underrated. Could be special with Luke. No idea if this could work, but I’d like to sign him, the pass rusher from Baltimore - Smith ( too pricey?) and/or honey badger. That would no doubt blow all of our cap.

Defense would be set for this year and would give any drafted DE a little time to develop - or at least lessen the pressure for immediate success.

We could then afford to target OL in the draft and maybe reach for a guy or two that should be safe, long-term starters at C or G. This assumes that we resign Williams at RT and they Moton is the guy at LT.

Everybody talking about cutting Kalil, I think Thompson is the guy we should watch out for. Ron didn't mention him much in his combine interview. I think that 9 mil is enticing to have in the open market. We could get a better player with that money.

Shaq at 9m is a bargain compared to 7m for Kalil. I know people love to bash Shaq and a ridiculous number of those are just based on who drafted him. He’s been rated above average to good every year. The fact that you are even mentioning that we might cut Shaq and keep Kalil is insane and how skewed the hate is towards him over his actual play. I’d like to reduce that number but damn, we have so many freaking holes on this team to replace that no one even wants to extend him and reduce the per year charge.

I'd rather they cut both, but have a feeling the Panthers will end up keeping them.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Shaq isn't a decent linebacker, but I would have a difficult time rating him as anything other than average. I'd hope the Panthers wouldn't care to spend $9M on an average player.

The problem is, depth. Without Thompson, the Panthers are going to be thin at linebacker, even if they sign/draft another. If Thompson is gone, then the Panthers need to acquire two LBs. Knowing how big the need is along the DLine, I wouldn't want to go into the draft looking for a starting LB in the first three rounds. That said, if a decent DE is not available and someone like Devon White is, well...

Kalil is less of an issue, provided they re-sign Williams, which I would put at 50-50 right now. If they don't sign Williams, then I'm not sure how they can let Kalil go AND hope to plug the holes along the DLine in the draft. As you can guess, I would prefer the Panthers spend their first three picks addressing the DLine, with S/LB/OLine (best available) addressed with the second 3rd round pick.

Thing is

For a solid starting DE is going to run you about 14 mil a year, we are sitting on 19 in cap space right now?  With potential to open around 10 more.  We would be walking a thin line in cap space just to sign a solid DE.  With several other big needs to fill

How much could we resign Clark for?  If we let Williams go, cut Thompson and Khalil..we can Draft a Tackle and still use that money to get a pass rusher as well as draft one after Drafting a Tackle...

Also we need to get another  TE regardless if Olsen is back or not..
