Gettleman gave up a third and sixth round pick to the Rams to move up for this guy.

& what makes this even worse is that DG didn't even have to trade up in order to draft Funchess.

Still not as bad as giving up the future 33rd pick for Armanti Edwards in the 3rd...

Pick #89 ended up being Sean Mannion (former Oregon State QB, now Rams back-up QB). Who would we have taken had we not traded up? Likely Daryl Williams, who we drafted at #102 after trading up for him. Pick #201 ended up being Bud Sasser, who isn't in the league anymore. Maybe Corey Robinson would have been the pick there. He was drafted at #240 by the Lions and the Panthers traded for to try and shore up the OL in 2017 for a conditional draft pick before being released the same month he was acquired.

Let's step back and say we didn't have to trade up for DWill and kept the #161 and #242 picks? At #242, does it even matter? Maybe Matt Wile, a UDFA punter that we took that season that is now on the Vikings roster? Who at #161 then? Maybe David Mayo, who the team took at #169 and then took CAP at #174. Who would be at #174? Maybe Kaelin Clay, taken at #184 by the Bucs before spending two separate stints in Carolina.

I mean... seeing who would have been drafted in the 2nd and 4th rounds without those trades is definitely a worthy conversation. But the picks that were given up? You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your later assessment in regards to throwaway picks. I could throw a fit and say that we could have gotten Frank Clark and Grady Jarrett instead, but that's how the draft goes. In hindsight, it wasn't as detrimental as it might look on the surface.

The 2016 offseason tho... the gamble that everything would pick up where we left off... ugh... horrendous.

If you went back to 2017 you would be looking at a full time starter with great hands. Getting that from a second rounder is great even if there are other weaknesses. Not sure what happened in 2018.

On the contrary, I'm not sure what happened in 2017. 2017 is the anomaly. He simply reverted back to his normal in 2018. Three years of inconsistent, subpar play and one year of legit NFL WR play. After four years, I think it's pretty clear what Funchess is and that's trash.
