We do have some poo laws but they really aren't hampering the hype. That is largely tied to the quality or perceived quality of the beer being made. That said I am very glad you have some(I know Red Oak is militant about changing laws) that are fighting so hard to change some of the archaic and nonsensical laws we have.

But we just don't have any heavy hitters on the national scene like our neighbors South Carolina(Westbrook), Virginia(Veil, Answer, Aslin). Wicked Weed was one before they sold out to the Evil Empire. Barrel Culture had some momentum moving in that direction before their original brewer went off the deep end and left. Heist was building that kind of reputation but their brewer left. It sort of seems like every time a NC brewery starts to get that national level recognition to make them a "travel destination" then they somehow manage to fug it up.

It's frustrating because we do have a very good scene in NC and places like the Triangle are one of the most desirable beer markets in the country. NC as a whole is a very desirable market for beer.

I think we've got better beers at and above the par Westbrook.  Is that a heavy hitter?

Beer Connoisseur rates NC as 13 with SC 37 and VA 29.

I dont think either hold a candle to NC in reputable beers.

VA has better high end beer by a pretty wide margin. The Answer, Aslin, Veil, and Triple Crossing are better than any NC brewery. Even Hardywood, Red Dragon and Tabul are doing some stuff that would be considered top tier in NC.

SC is basically Westbrook and 8th State. Charles Towne, Birds Fly South and Legal Remedy do some good stuff but only Westbrook and 8th State are probably in the class of being better than most/all of our breweries. Westbrook is a heavy hitter though. People travel from all across the country to obtain their beer.

I think in the long term, NC has some contenders to overtake guys like that(Heist, High Branch, Barrel Culture, New Anthem, Burial, etc). VA/SC just have spots that make them a real beer destination. We don't quite have that yet. Once Wicked Weed went to the evil empire, we fell out of the "beer destination" tourism.

Side note:

It looks like the Untappd beer festival had a lot of issues beyond weather, unfortunately.
