Potential June 1st cut possiblities

It wouldn't be terrible IIRC. Only about 1.5M in space spread out over his last two seasons. I'd rather keep him and get a little bit of cap room right now than release him outright and have DT jump even higher on our list of needs. I fully expect Butler is gone, so if we can Poe, we're looking at KK Short, Woodrow Hamilton, and Elijah Qualls as our current DTs.

We'd save $6M cutting Poe post June 1st, sure, but you aren't getting a good replacement for that much this year unless you plan on drafting one of the top ones in the first round.

I'd rather let this year be a prove it year for him. He's "only" hitting us for $9.3M this season and then we can cut him after the season and save $10M and only carry $3.3M in dead space. I don't want to do anything to that contract to drive up that $3.3M figure.

I think Addison's deal should be extended, tbqh, and we should get some cap room there.

I still haven't read the details on Captain's "release" other than him being informed he would be released. If it isn't official, he could very well get one of the designations.

Kalil should 100% get the other.

The only other option I've considered at this point is Greg Olsen. He's old in football terms, and I'm not sold he'll ever come back. I think with him it will be an actual "wait and see" situation and he could be released after June 1st, thus requiring no designation.

Poe could be decent as a 3-4 rotational DT, and I give him more credit in our run D 4-3 than most do. He's another candidate that should have a base restructure, freeing up some money for this year.

I had not considered Olsen.  But after mulling it over it might not be such a bad idea.  Not sure how stable that foot is ever going to be again.  Better to plan on replacing him now than have to do it on the fly during season.

I agree with Bronn on Oslen. I have serious doubts about whether or not he'll return effectively and whether he'll make it through a season. But I think he's one of those guys you bring to camp and if need be you make him a legit post-June 1st cut after seeing what he has to offer.

This draft is pretty deep on TE.  I would not rule out Olsen if we draft another decent TE.  Maybe the Manhertz signing was the precursor to letting Greg go.

Manhertz is a TE, but for us he essentially plays a different position for us. We basically have blocking TEs and receiving TEs. Greg is a receiving TE for us, Manhertz is a blocking TE.

How much would we save cutting Olsen?     I don't expect him to play more than half the season, if that.

IIRC without looking it would clear almost 3 million post June 1st.

It would add like 3.5 million or more for each of the last two years in dead cap though, but we're looking at that if we cut him later anyways.

Poe is awful, cut him. I'd honestly rather go DT at 16 and edge in 3rd or FA, but keeping Poe is a no go

Bingo, Bango, Bongo.  If you go back and watch each and every play from every game (like I do), you will quickly see that the reason that KK, Pepp, and

Addison didn't get to the QB, was that Poe was getting us gouged up the middle.  And wasn't even drawing a double team at that.  Tevon Coleman

with the Falcons ran all over us with simple toss sweeps.  IE, Dan Quinn knew Poe was slow as Xmas, and took advantage of it.  Take Christian Wilkins

at # 16.  Sweat can't set the edge at 245 lbs.  Ferrell can, if he's there at # 16.  Take a safety or nickel in the 2nd round.  An interior o-lineman in the 3rd.

And a 220 lb. plus red zone RB in the 4th.

Poe had nothing to do with Short getting worked over by single blockers. I thought that losing Star had a lot to do with Short's fall off until I went back and watched him specifically. Opposing offenses weren't really scheming against him, he just plain didn't play well.

I'm not saying it will be or should be Addison.

It just seems like we might be planning on designating 2 players this year.  Kalil makes sense, who is the other?  I'm thinking it might be Poe.

Not sure what the long-term plan is, but honestly if you can afford to eat the hit up front you're probably better off doing that than kicking the can down the road. Captain's hit is relatively small enough that we may simply be shooting to eat it now rather than some bigger plan to use the two post-6/1 designations elsewhere.

Maybe, we should know pretty soon anyway.

According to this article

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/agents-take-the-nfls-crucial-2019-offseason-dates-and-what-they-mean-for-your-team/

$2.5m of Poe's 2019 salary fully guarantees and $6.5m of Short's salary does also on 3/15/19.  If either were to be cut it will happen before then.

Its shocking Short, Peppers, and Addison couldn't get to the QB on run plays. Wow!
