Eh, Shaq is pretty good and still developing.  He will probably sign an extension soon.  I

I just don't see the development. He's basically still the same player we drafted. He has the physical tools and makes a splash play here and there, but overall he's not that hybrid player who plays the run like a LB but can cover like a S that we thought we were getting. Luke's play also drops off considerably when it's Shaq beside him instead of TD. That tells me that Luke doesn't trust him. If Luke doesn't trust him then I don't either.

In Cap's defense, he wasn't the only hole in that piece of Swiss cheese we've been calling our defensive backfield.

He was our CB3 and often played in the slot. There was a time he'd automatically be lined up on the other team's slowest or possession receiver. Those days passed a couple of seasons back and he was often targeted as a mismatch. We often didn't either provide him with help or rotate the two better DBs into coverage against the better receivers when they moved to the slot.

I wish him luck out there and he'll find a home next season, I'm reasonably sure. He was a Panther and gave what he had out there. Can't blame him for that, but maybe there'll be a better fit for both him and the Panther's defense out there.

I think he was targeted as a mismatch because he couldn't cover poo, period. Captain's only strong suit was as a blitzer.

Fair enough.  Agree to disagree.  I think he is an average LB with upside.  Needs more consistent reps.  Not that it matters, but he is considered Above average according to PFF.  I respect your opinion though.

So was Hurney’s. The past two drafts have been great (almost brilliant) and the past two FAs have been awful. Kalil, Captain, Smith (trade), Searcy, Cockrell and Poe. That’s a gob of money for 4 years of awful play and 3 years of injuries.

This. Who cares who was better or worse? Fact is they have both done badly. We definitely need better fortune in FA to go with a good draft.

Younger faster and more hungry is the direction I think we’re looking at. Exciting times ahead this offseason.

Yep, also told Adams that he wasn't coming back. After not resigning TD and letting Pepp walk, (not sure if Pepp would have even considered coming back), we are definitely making a much needed move towards the young.

All-in-all, though, Captain still had a good career, especially as a 7th rounder.  He was a steal early on, and he played very well his first go round here.

Best of luck to you Mr. Munnerlyn

From what I watched, he was pretty darned good for the vikes too. I was excited when we brought him back...until I wasn't.

Umm, Poe, Smith, Searcy and Cockrell was $23.3 million in cash last year. If we toss Kalil, he will have cost us $25.3 million. I’m not defending Kalil’s contract in any way, but let’s not ignore the same fiasco. If we get rid of everyone except Poe, we will have spent $4m more for 17 receptions from Smith and 2 years of Poe than we did for Kalil.

Dont underestimate Poe’s cost and throwing away money on multiple contracts. It’s why I laugh when people try to say Kalil is the worst move we’ve ever made. Not even close to Gilbert in cap % and no picks.

Gettleman's last foray was more than just Kalil though. He gave Captain a 4 year $17.5M deal and he gave Russell Shepard a 3 year $10.5M deal. Those on top of the 5 year $55M Kalil deal.

Poe got 3 years $28M. Cockrell got 2 years $6.8M. Wright got 3 years $7.5M. of those three deals, only Poe's carries significant cap ramifications.

Yes, Kalil was a massive mistake but the Gilbert mistake was even bigger. Considerably so.

The danger with free agency is that all of those guys has had their former team decide that they weren't worth what they were gonna get paid. Good, young, healthy players don't hit FA unless their current team thinks they aren't worth it. Teams can always create cap space if they need to and want to badly enough. Kind of like us with Norwell last year. Yes, he was a very good OG for us and I'm sure we would've liked to have kept him. But was he worth the biggest OG contract in NFL history? LOL! Hell no!
