I think he knew he was getting fired and decided to screw us

All of the signings made sense on the surface. Yeah, the Kalil contract was way too big but we had a huge need at LT. Shepard had shown some promise at WR and was considered a great special teamer. Captain was a good nickel in Minnesota and our secondary was trash.

Yeah, in hindsight all of the signings were god awful but sometimes that's how it goes. I don't think he intentionally screwed us at all. I think he just stepped into the batter's box and went down swinging. Kind of like how he did with DL in the draft. Butler - 1st round pick, bust. Ealy - 2nd round pick, bust. Hall - 3rd round pick, bust.

Gettleman looked brilliant early on, but the shine sure did wear off quickly.

The giants are learning about Gettlemen quickly lol

You can only designate two players as early post-6/1 cuts. I certainly hope we plan on making Matt Kalil one of them.

Yeah, I know. I think Captain will eventually be one (even though it is being reported that he isn't) and Kalil will be the other.

IIRC their money is still on the books until June 2nd, when it frees up that space to enable us to sign picks, etc.

The only other candidate I had pegged as a possible designation, for monetary reasons, would be Greg Olsen. But, I think we might see how his foot actually is this summer and wait and let him go AFTER June 1st if we're scared away, thus not requiring the designation. OR, maybe he comes back and we just let his @$2Million or so stay on the books for 2019. I think he's done, though, so take it FWIW.

I really hope Greg can return strong for one last season, but yeah the track record of big guys with recurring foot injuries is a terrible one indeed. Only further complicated by his age.

In the event he can, I certainly hope we don't just bury Thomas on the bench. He showed too much promise to simply disappear if Olsen returns.

I think we might bring in a FA TE as well, and if we do, I think the writing is on the wall that Olsen's days are numbered.

Although, I was a little surprised we brought Manhertz back. I figured he was a holdover of an old system, but I was wrong. I can see them still seeing his viability as a TE2 and still a developmental guy, so that's cool with me.

Thomas, right now, is the future. But, I'm not sure we're sold on him being Greg's replacement yet. I'm hoping we bring in someone like Jesse James to push/mentor Thomas and spot start, in case Greg's done.

I think we see Manhertz as our blocking TE. But kinda like I said in the Hood thread, I'd like to see us get more strategic with our personnel usage based on match ups. If we're facing a strong run D, game plan around it. Play the scatback types and the pass catching TE to create favorable matchups. Playing a weak run D, play the power back and the blocking TE to grind them out on the ground.

We always seem too hellbent on playing "Panthers football". fug that. Don't beat your head against the wall trying to impose your will on the other team. Nothing wrong with taking the path of least resistance. The teams that are good year in and year out are the teams that can adapt.
