No IT expertise here but sure seems like a "system failure" close to game time could wreak some real havoc....  Multiple airlines have had to ground all airplanes due to an IT malfunction, see no reason why it couldn't happen here as well.

I would imagine you download the tix to your phone and scan barcode.  If you saying that faiils then they could punch in the number.

Whether they scan a piece of paper or a phone screen isnt going to affect what happens if there is an IT issue.

With a paper ticket they could still keep track of everyone who entered by tearing the off and retaining the stub, same as has been done since the turnstile was invented.

There are backup methods to scanning digital tickets in an "offline" mode.

One process requires ticket holders to go to a specific gate as marked on their ticket (like "Gate D1", "Gate D2" etc).  individual devices get a download of a specific collection of ticket data directly to the device, and then only scan that set of tickets at that gate.   If your ticket doesn't scan, you went to the wrong gate OR it's an invalid ticket.

there are other ways, but that's one method in use.

Interesting....good info, thanks.

If the situation ever does present itself will be interesting to see if the stadium staff can successfully execute a backup plan like you describe here.   Personally I like the ticket stub option best...

The Winnipeg Jets do the same thing and just started this year. No more option to print the ticket on paper, must be digital.

It’s caused headaches a couple of times when I’ve gone about transferring tickets but other than that it’s been okay.

You can just take a screen shot of the ticket and your phone can be offline and it still works.

I think this was a possibility when paper tickets were used.  The bar code on them was scanned and the scanner connected back to servers.  Ticket stubs haven't been used in a while I think.

I am more concerned about my individual phone.  What happens if I have a problem with it?    And I hope there is a way around this for the few people who just don't want smart phones.

For the last two seasons I’ve had to deal with just digital options for all the away game trips we plan. It’s been a fantastic experience

Can’t lose your ticket when you’re hammered.  “I swear it was in muh pocket bro”
