Mel Kiper Mock 2.0

1.0 Pick:

16) Carolina Panthers: Brian Burns, OLB, Florida State

Mario Addison led the Panthers with nine sacks this season, followed by five for the ageless Julius Peppers. Unless Peppers can play forever, this is a clear area of need for Carolina. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Burns, who had 10 sacks in 2018, needs more time in the weight room, but he could grow into a defensive end.

2.0 Pick

16. Carolina Panthers Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson

This is all about filling a need, as Julius Peppers retired and there's no surefire replacement on the roster. Ferrell (6-5, 265) is a classic 4-3 defensive end who can get after quarterbacks -- he had 21 sacks over the last two seasons -- and hold his own in the run game. The Carolina defense collapsed last season, and it could also look at safety (Mike Adams turns 38 this offseason) and linebacker (Thomas Davis is moving on) here.

My personal completely inexperienced "I have no clue what I am talking about" take.  Which probably puts me on par with Kiper.  This is honestly a pick I would love.  Ferrell, generally, ranks in the top 6-8.  The number 2 DE.  I prefer this pick about 100x more than Burns to fit our team needs.  His size.  His production.  Not having to "grow" into the position.

9. Buffalo Bills D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

10. Denver Broncos Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

11. Cincinnati Bengals Devin White, ILB, LSU

12. Green Bay Packers Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma

Seeing Ferrell slightly dropping in most mocks recently. Supposedly, guys liked Ferrell a lot last year more than they do now. If he doesnt show explosiveness at the combine, he could slip. Montez, Jachai and Burns could put on a show in Indy which help push them up for teams needing OLB like GB and Raiders. But, it’s hard to see Detroit passing up on Ferrell.

I do see Clelin Ferrell mocked to the Panthers more than any other player.  Hes one of the only that are mocked repeatedly-- therefore I dont think hes ludicrous.  If anything, hes playing the percentages, using the player most often mocked to us on his mock 2.0

For me-- for THIS mock-- if we draft Clelin and pass over Jonah Williams,... I would be really pissed. Well-- I would until it was proven it was the right pick over Jonah.

I'd be pretty happy with either of those players

Odd with this most recent Kiper mock, he has WRs going much higher now. And how in the world is Sweat taken way before Ferrell?

Although this is all based on a mock draft, interesting to think that if we were picking at 9 or 16 in this draft, Ferrell would conceivably be the pick either way. And at a significantly smaller cap number and smaller 5th year option salary when picking at 16. Granted, I think there's a much better chance he lasts until 9 than he lasts until 16 in real life, so kind of a silly point I admit. Just trying to come up with silver linings here.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
