Sam Mills III tasked with game management duties

That's the part that rubs people the wrong way.

Mills has only ever been a position coach. He's never really had any duties that involved game and clock management. So Rivera is basically asking him to take charge of something that he has zero experience with.

Like I said above, I don't know that this is necessarily a "best man for the job" sort of thing as much as it is a "well we need to shuffle things because this is a little awkward" thing.

I certainly hope Mills does a good job, but it does concern me a little bit that we're asking him to do something he's never even practiced. That really makes me wonder if Rivera is taking this seriously.

if you have the attitude that "hey anybody can do it", well obviously that's not true, is it?

Gotcha...so we should have hired a former NFL Head Coach for this minor assistant position. Cause that’s the only person who would be qualified by your own metrics, right? Who else has experience in game and clock management?

Some of y’all are blowing Mills’ responsibilities way out of proportion. He’s not “taking over” game management/time clock duties...he’s assisting Rivera with them. Rivera is still in charge, but now he has someone who he can confer with and hopefully check him on some of his questionable decisions.

Experience helps with anything, sure...but it’s not a big deal when you’re tasked with assisting in relatively basic things like clock management and challenges. What’s much more important is good situational awareness and just general football knowledge. If you want to use experience to gauge someone’s qualifications with game management, then hey Rivera is among the best!

Most of you sitting at home on the couch are comfortable enough questioning Rivera on things like using timeouts poorly, making bad challenges, when to kick field goals or when to go for 2, etc...and think you could do so much better of a job. Ironically, these are the same people who now question whether Sam Mills III, a man with an immense football background, is really qualified to help with making such decisions.

So again I say...Huddle gonna Huddle.

Not clear it was forced. It is a trend for head coaches who are calling plays to have a game manager help out. Quinn in Atlanta is doing the same thing.

And who says hiring from within is a bad idea. In most companies that is desirable and it gives folks hope there is an advancement path inside  the company. You say it isn't negative but everything but the ending is negative.

I am saying that I'm going to be very skeptical about any Ron Rivera hiring from within.

First it was Shula.

Last year it was Eric Washington.

One has been fired after far too many seasons, and the other has take what in reality is a demotion.

Yea, I can have some skepticism when it comes to Ron promotions.

Imagine doing 1 job for 7 years and finally realizing that you are bad at one very important part of it?

Or imagine being actually good at your job and having constant critics nitpick about what they  think is negative ignoring all the good things you do. Especially when most of these folks have never done your job or had a clue what you do.

Not questioning Sam's qualifications, but I was really hoping they would bring someone in from the outside with a fresh perspective on game management. I guess Tepper told Ron to hire a guy for this role and Ron picked Sam, so if Tepper still sees us giving away 5 seconds Ron will be gone because he failed to identify a game management assist that could actually improve our game management.

Imagine others thinking that you are good at your job when you have 3 winning seasons out of 8.

Lol the amount of baseless speculation here is ridiculous....yeah of course Tepper definitely must have forced Ron to hire a game-managing assistant! It definitely has nothing to do with him taking on defensive play-calling duties...yeah just that tiny little thing that probably requires zero additional time or effort and definitely will not in any way impede Rivera’s ability to invest the necessary attention to all aspects of game management.

I have to wonder...what does Sam MIlls 3 have to qualify him for anything? A man of an ancestor that was an icon and has a statue. Yall were so mad Bersin was kept on because well, he was only clutch when his number was rarely called, but otherwise here because someone with money and power wanted him here.  People want to focus on the idea that this man is needed to control RR...but really, what is he doing to benefit anyone other than his name???

Now this guy gifted with a team job years ago because someone in his family was a great player here. That is exactly the kind of  good ol boy system and logic many used to hate about JR, and used as jokes about Bersin. BUT....

What exact point are you trying to make?

Maybe he is very detail oriented, thinks quick on his feet and is very good at multitasking and he was picked because he was good at it. It isn't always that an outside hire is always better. Why is that the automatic assumption around here?

Sean McVay, yeah, the one this fanbase lusts over, was rated as the the worst clock manager among active head coaches and this is with a “game manager” already on staff (Jedd Fisch). That’s right, one of the teams in the Super Bowl also has a “game manager” on staff

Been saying this all season. Also, Bill B has a game manager on his staff. Who also tells him when to challenge.

huddle gonna huddle.
