I am sorry but James Borrego sucks.

Coach Cliff was the only legitimate NBA executive in upper management when Air Train Wreck ran him off.

Borrego is less qualified.

Train wreck....

Cliff was a good coach but his basketball philosophy is/was outdated.

This year's hornets team is basically identical to last year's team but it is doing a little better.  You could argue that last year's team had more talent since Dwight Howard was on board all year last year.

As of today the Bobcats/Hornets are -9 vs. final win total for last year.

Magic are +2.

The Hornets are very likely to win more games this year than they did last year.  What Cliff does with the Magic is irrelevant to the argument as we do not know what JB could have done with their talent.

What Cliff does with magic absolutely is relevant....same metric you provided re: Borrego.

The only real way to compare two coaches is to have them both coach the same set of players.  That is not usually possible.  This year's hornets is a little different than last year's team so its not perfect but it is as close as you will get.  JB is doing better with this group than Cliff did last year.

JB has never had a chance to coach the players that Orlando has so there is no way to know if he would do better or worse than Cliff with those guys.

At the end of the day none of this really matters.  Neither team has or had enough talent to compete with the better teams in the league no matter who the coach is.   The only significant thing I like about JB over Cliff is that he does a better job getting the younger players some minutes.  Cliff would put them in his dog house and they would not play for long stretches.

LOL.  Monk has averaged 12 minutes per game over the last 5 games.....Cliff haters would go nuts if that were happening under him.

Cliff is a better coach than Borrego, period.

Monk rarely saw the court under Cliff until the season was over.  Cliff sucks, Borrego might suck too but its too early to tell.

There's are reasons Monk doesn't play as much under either coach as some fans would like -- Monk isn't putting in the work.

Cliff is a terrific coach, as evidenced by his re-hiring as Head Coach of another NBA team within 7 weeks of being ill advisedly dismissed by the Bobcats/Hornets.

Borrego may turn out to be a good coach but he's not better than Steve Clifford....

He failed in Charlotte.  They brought in his man crush, Dwight Howard, and he could not sniff the playoffs.  His system is old fashioned.  He runs the offense through the center.  He is probably the only coach who still does that.  It is great to stuff the stat sheet for Al Jefferson, Dwight Howard or Vucivic but it does not translate to wins.  His defense can't defend the three to save its life.  His system was great 20 years ago but it does not work in the modern NBA where teams feature shooters at all five positions.  The playoff year where we lost to the  Heat was our best team under his tenure but that was more on Cho than anyone.  He found Lin off the scrap heap and got great play from him.  He got us Courtney Lee for nothing who also had a big part in getting us there.  As soon as those guys left the bottom fell out.

"Failed"....?!?!?!  HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Cliff has had far and away the best track record of any coach who had to enter the ring with a bad leg and one hand tied behind his back by Air Train Wreck, Yes Co. & Cho!

Since Air Train Wreck joined as an owner and took control of all basketball operations in June of 2006 only 3 squads have posted a winning record (in 12 years), 2 of the 3 were under Coach Cliff.

In those same 12 years, 3 playoff appearances...2 under Coach Cliff.

In 12 years....15 total playoffs games -- 11 under Coach Cliff.

In 12 years....one playoff series where even a SINGLE GAME was won, and even remotely close to being won overall....yup, Coach cliff again.

In 12 years under Air Train Wreck the franchise has won 3 playoff games, all under Coach Cliff.

Firing Coach Cliff was one of the dumbest things Air Train Wreck, Yes Co. & Cho ever did....and Ol' Trainer and his band of Yes Men have done a ton of incredibly stupid things.

I don't think you understand how much of a handicap it is to work for Ol' Trainer & Yes Co....

....by your definition Borrego will be a failure too.

Don't look now but the lowly Magic, with their crummy Coach Cliff, just edged past the Bobcats/Hornets for the 8th playoff spot.  Obviously there's no guarantee that's how things will end up at seasons end but it sure would be ripe if so!

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
