100%. Mathieu got 1 year $7m. I like Reid and I’m glad we resigned him, but he’s now the 7th highest paid safety unless Thomas and/or Joyner make more. This is a guy no one wanted las year. According to PFF rankings we certainly overpaid.

If we were going to throw this money around why not just sign Mathieu last year? Heck, why not use Norwell’s comp this year and trade up from Gaulden’s pick and take Justin Reid and use all this money to go after Frank Clark or Clowney or Lawrence?

I like signing Reid but giving him a top 10 salary at a position that was going for peanuts the past two years when most teams wouldn’t touch him is so Hurney. People acting like it’s a great deal since we didn’t pay $10m per year are very out of touch on the safety market.

Yep. Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

This defense could quickly be back to top 5 with the right moves. A FA DE and early DE in the draft and then FS and nickel in free agency or day 2 of draft and we'd be looking very good. Also could let Shaq walk to clear up cap space and draft a LB to replace him. Add in Rivera coordinating it (definitely the best we've had there since McD left, maybe even better) and some new mixed 3-4 looks and there's a lot of reason to be excited about the D next year.

Offense is a different story until we know know more about Cam's recovery and see what happens on the OL.

i'm pretty sure the interior linemen just has a bad year. it happens. find just one guy at end who demands a double team (this should be the focal point of our FA period imo) and suddenly both those guys, and whoever we plug in at the other end position, look a hell of a lot better.

The franchise tag for safety is estimated to be 11.2 million this year so 7.5 seems reasonable for one of the better safeties.

I agree with you, but we didn't sign one of the better safeties.

I want to see the terms before I say one way or the other.

3 years, $22 million, $10m guaranteed plus incentives up to maybe $2M more over the contract. We didn't get him cheap, but I think as we see the market roll out there for free agent safeties, we'll see we're about right on the pricing.

I liked Reid's willingness to get in there on plays, but I do wish he would work on tackling more than making highlight reel hits. Honestly, the whole defense needed to work on tackling. I think he'll also do better with a season in the system (he did spend an extended period on the couch before joining the team) and behind better play calling. I believe he performed better as Rivera took the reigns from DC Washington.

I still think it's a great move that solidifies some questions before heading into the draft.

I think interior DL didn't deserve all the flak they got, including Poe and Butler. The edge was so consistently bad that our tackles were getting double and triple teamed every play. That's a really good thing if the ends can capitalize, but they couldn't so we were easily outmatched in the trenches.

people whining about 10 million guaranteed over a 3 year contract for eric reid have an agenda btw

A lot of the anti-Reid comments are consistent with the anti-Harper comments a few years ago. Don't make this about something it isn't.
