Panthers finally seem to want to get their secondary in good shape and above average, and now the pass rush is crap. Typical panthers.

Its typical NFL honestly. teams address one weakness and another pops up. its the nature of the beast. we might finally have some decent WR's to throw too but a QB with a bum shoulder cause he had to carry the team on his back for about 5 years straight.

You are a BRJS'er if I have ever seen one.

This isn't the first time we have heard this song and dance.  When someone says over and over that they are going to change, and never do....I believe actions not words.

If Ron adapts, I'll be happy.  Until then I'm trusting history, not words.

Words first then actions. He is saying the right things, now let's look for action. I have no problem with folks being sceptical. But let's see what he does before deciding he isn't sincere not assuming it.

because I didn't do anything? I hate all forms of politics on this board. Lets make that very clear. Also who the hell reports someone and then says "I dont care if you get banned" like why use the report button then? Ive never reported anyone in 5 years here and I don't plan on ever doing it unless someone was like posting my personal info. You want me to be perma banned for laughing at the guy saying people have an agenda while he has an ANTIFA logo under his user name? do you not understand Irony?

So you're recommending that Hurney give a deal to someone above what others would pay, just for the sake of being honest?

This can't be a serious opinion.

No, of course not. Honesty is important but that is part of the team's consideration of a FA's worth and value to the team and is part of negotiations. So, yes, I am serious. And, exactly, how do you know what others would pay? You don't. So you're just guessing and surmising.

For all you penny pinchers in here, $22M for 3 years is #7.333 per year. Not $7.5. I'm good at math. Hey, Hurney! Hire me and I'll keep all your numbers straight. :)

no it doesn't. a good contract is a good contract and a bad contract is a bad contract. is cam newton's contract less of a value because we gave the kalil brothers all of that money after they were toast? 10 million guaranteed over 3 years for a starting safety in his physical prime with a pro bowl under his belt and experience with your team is not a big deal. we need more contracts that aren't a big deal and less that are.

I'm talking about the cumulative effect of overpaying.  This doesn't seem to be an obvious case of this, but it does look to be a little high.  Again, I have not seen the structure.

Hurney overpaid for Gano, Smith, Poe, etc.  I'm just hoping this isn't another, and I don't think it is.

There are far too many people who are hung up on the average value of the contract instead of the guaranteed money. Average annual value is largely meaningless in nfl contracts. A more useful way to think of it is that the Panthers are risking 10 million dollars on the bet that Eric Reid will play up to or beyond the level of a top-third safety (factoring in the rising salary cap). If he doesn't, we cut him and are out that 10 million dollars. If he gets anywhere near pro bowl level, we have a great bargain locked up for the next 3 years. Most likely he ends up in the middle as a reasonable value for a starting safety. But I think that's a better chance he outperforms his contract rather than become a complete waste.

I'll admit that we could have possibly negotiated down a bit, particularly in light of the absence of other suitors. But this is hardly an egregious overpay.

7 million a year lol. no other team was even willing to offer him a contract. feels bad man

not a fan at that rate. Guaranteed money isnt bad but would have rather let him test the market or try to pay him around 5mil a year.

Hopefully going to SS works out better because as an in-the-box thumper, I really liked him. I'm coverage? Not so much

Good.  Much more important...IMO.

However, I'm not really buying the 34 talk yet.  Maybe Ronnie Boy has really changed and is trying to get "outside the box" (hate that term) but IMO it seems more like Ron is saying things that Tepper wants to hear, not necessarily what he's going to do.

That's what I said.  There is a yet in there...meaning that he actually could do that.  There is also a seems in there, which would indicate that it's not stone cold fact.  I am very skeptical of what Ron Rivera says, as he has said many things through the years and continues to typically operate the exact same way season in and season out.  Again, we shall see, but I'm not buying it.
