Yeah, well I have no home.  I don't care about the kneeling.  I'm disappointed in the play.  Hopefully he'll step up with spring training and a full season.

I honestly wasn't disappointed with his play. We pretty much got about what I expected. Reid is basically an old school head hunting safety playing in a league that has practically banned that syltyle of play. He would've been a great player 20 years ago. He's a bit limited in today's NFL though which is why I think k we overpaid. Still though, he's an improvement over the majority of the safeties we've out on the field over the years so I'm not too broken up over it.

Clearly the ONLY possible reason anyone would be unhappy with 7.5 million a year are because they are racists. No other possible explanations. Even though Tyrann Mathieu makes less money... sigh

Tyrann Mathieu signed a 1 year deal at 7 mil, which is now up.  As he is a UFA.  He will easily surpass Eric Reid.

 Panthers re-sign S Eric Reid (3 years, $22 million): C+ Grade
Carolina's secondary was largely a mess last year, though there were two players in that group who weren't complete liabilities. One was rookie cornerback Donte Jackson. The other was safety Eric Reid.

Reid is a physically gifted safety who performed well at times in 2018. However, he was penalized far too often. This hurt the Panthers at times, though Reid made up for it by occasionally making quality plays.

This signing should be in the B-/C+ range. Reid should've been retained, but this seems like a slight overpay, given how penalties Reid accumulates throughout a season.

I'd give a a low C myself.  Not a great signing.  He's just about an average safety.  The pay's too high.

Finally someone with a brain. Who needs a hard hitting safety who can stuff the box when you can't hit anyone and teams aren't running much?

Oh ya... a team hell bent on playing football as it was 10-15 years ago.

He was/is our best safety and will be an absolute asset in our hybrid 3-4 system that we will run this year.

100%. Mathieu got 1 year $7m. I like Reid and I’m glad we resigned him, but he’s now the 7th highest paid safety unless Thomas and/or Joyner make more. This is a guy no one wanted las year. According to PFF rankings we certainly overpaid.

If we were going to throw this money around why not just sign Mathieu last year? Heck, why not use Norwell’s comp this year and trade up from Gaulden’s pick and take Justin Reid and use all this money to go after Frank Clark or Clowney or Lawrence?

I like signing Reid but giving him a top 10 salary at a position that was going for peanuts the past two years when most teams wouldn’t touch him is so Hurney. People acting like it’s a great deal since we didn’t pay $10m per year are very out of touch on the safety market.

Its Hurney and Rivera continuing to do Hurney and Rivera things.

Primarily because Tepper chose to retain Hurney and Rivera.

lol because you and one online guy said so...

In all reality, he's not making that much more than a first round rookie safety would, and you get experience in the big leagues with Reid. IIRC Jamal Adams gets like 5.5 or so a year. Once his contract is up, he'll probably get at least $12M a year.

Anyone upset over this, at the very least, isn't seeing the big picture.

If that guy thought that Bradberry wasn't an asset more often than not then I question if he actually watched the games.

The big picture is the team, in it's entirety.

Signing Eric Reid to an extension is a good thing.  Overpaying Eric Reid on said extension is a bad thing.

From the outside looking in, it seems that we likely overpaid.  However, as I have said, I'm not going to call this a good, bad, or average signing just yet.  I do not like Hurney's record in free agency in round 1 nor round 2.

We look at it and say 10M in guarantees, no big deal.  However it becomes a big deal when you lump that in with the other bad contracts and extensions that Hurney has done since his time back, and you do really get to "see the big picture".  And it ain't pretty.

Awesome, glad.  He was a good team-mate and while I disagree with him, he has a right to have his beliefs and I will defend his right to have those beliefs.  Moreso than that, he was a hell of a good strong safety, he's a big thumper who will lock up our SS position, now to find a FS and not square peg a round hole anymore.

My concern with Hurney goes beyond the initial contract. When Hurney needs cap space and starts converting salary to bonus to spread the hit out is where he really gets on trouble.

I haven't really heard a valid argument to support the "overpaid" argument. Reid has been a top 10 safety in this league, and I believe he can return to that form. He was late to the picture last year, and had nothing in front of him.

This contract is very conservative by Hurney standards, and playing whataboutism with it doesn't really compute.

As has pretty much been said, ultimately it is a 2 year $10 M deal if things don't work out. That isn't bad for a starting, experienced, high caliber safety.
