Rivera said he was playing at a Pro Bowl level and despite his questionable decision with personnel i think overall he knows defense pretty well

Despite any other limitations, Rivera is a hell of a defensive coach.  He proved it again at the end of last year, and Reid was playing extremely well under Rivera's calls.

Reid has the body of a prototypical hard-hitting NFL SS.  Those guys aren't growing on trees

This. So much this. You're not renting a god damn house. Free agency isn't shopping at Dollar General. If you don't pay the guy in the neighborhood of what you and he both want and try to low ball him then that FA has no real value to you. You want other FA's to highly consider the Panthers? Then you respect them and pay what FA's are worth based on their value to the team. Besides, he said he wants to play here, he feels good about the Panthers. The Huddle has always seen that as a very good thing. It should be in Reid's favor this time too.

I can't believe it took 12 pages before anybody said anything about a FA's worth. Thanks, @NAS

So you're recommending that Hurney give a deal to someone above what others would pay, just for the sake of being honest?

This can't be a serious opinion.

To be fair, there's plenty of others who would jeer the signing even if it was for veteran minimum with no guarantees for the same reason.

The comical thing about it is that both factions constantly accuse the other of doing nothing but pushing their agenda... while doing nothing but pushing their agenda.

Further discussion here:

Yeah, well I have no home.  I don't care about the kneeling.  I'm disappointed in the play.  Hopefully he'll step up with spring training and a full season.

Call me crazy, but I think you pay the guy what he's worth even if nobody wants him due to the kneeling controversy.  I would feel really lousy about the Panthers using that as "leverage" to pay him less than he's worth as a starting NFL safety.  I think he'll only be better next year with Rivera calling the Defense and having an entire off-season training program with the team.

Teams use leverage based on injury history all the time. How is that any different than this? This isn't a charity, if you can get a good deal on a good player, then you try to do it. How was that 1 year $1 million contract last year not carved out using the exact same leverage?

Also, the average starting salary for safeties is probably like 5 million per year, this was top 10 money.

They're also not in that much demand anymore either.

The high-flying offenses that are popular now are putting more of a premium on safeties who can cover well over safeties who hit hard.

Finally someone with a brain. Who needs a hard hitting safety who can stuff the box when you can't hit anyone and teams aren't running much?

Oh ya... a team hell bent on playing football as it was 10-15 years ago.

It actually puts him about 10th, IIRC. Most of the guys above him are in the second or third year of their deals, and the guys signed more recently make just under what Reid will, and are less caliber players.
