IIRC he actually turned down a one year deal with SF.

Plus, I think the way the league has evolved, safeties have more leverage this offseason

The guy is only 27 years old. We're locking him up for his prime, and can decide what to do after that.

I'm honestly not debating whether I believe he is worth 7 million per year, he probably is. It's just that given the circumstances, I feel like we could have signed him for half that price. I'm not a GM though. Maybe there were other offers on the table for Reid? It did seem like the whole "controversy" quieted down towards the end of the season so maybe other teams grew some balls to offer him a deal.

FWIW Honey Badger got a one year, $7M deal to prove he could still play and stay healthy. He played in 99% of their defensive snaps this past season, and had 3 sacks, 89 tackles and 2 picks.

Reid only played in around 300 less snaps (3 less games,) 91% pf defensive plays for us while he was with us, had 1 sack, 71 tackles, a pick, and a forced fumble.

Basically, we got Reid for the price of a three year long "prove it" deal that Honey Badger got.

I think it will end up being a bargain.

This is a rather simplistic way to compare two guys who aren't really on the same level talent wise.

Also, I think you'll see the top tier of safeties this offseason going for at least a couple more million a year.

I still want Landon Collins back there with Reid. Collins would cost more, obviously, but man we'd have two good, young safeties for several years.

Call me crazy, but I think you pay the guy what he's worth even if nobody wants him due to the kneeling controversy.  I would feel really lousy about the Panthers using that as "leverage" to pay him less than he's worth as a starting NFL safety.  I think he'll only be better next year with Rivera calling the Defense and having an entire off-season training program with the team.

says who?

Reid got here late last season, all things considered, and did pretty danged good with what he had in front of him.

Fix the pass rush and break out of the damned zone once in a while, and Reid can hang with any safety out there.

Before the whole anthem thing, and maybe some minor critique about his tackling form (head first,) I believe he was considered one of the top safeties in the league.

Not considering everything involved is rather simplistic imho.

Did not read the entire thread,  but Person (who knows much more  that the bottom half of 38% of the Huddle), aligned the move to Adams leaving.

Are we looking at Reid at SS now?  With Gaulden and Searcy (I know, save it for later) at FS, I hope we move Reid to SS.  He would be better there.

The few times I saw the Panthers, Reid did not overwhelm me.  He often looked out of position and late to react.  But in fairness, the entire defense looked out of position and late to react.  As LinvilleGorge said, Luke looked out of place and slow to react in that same timeframe.  I suspect Ronnie Lott could have looked out of position and slow to react in that scheme (using the term loosely), I’ll wait and see before drawing any conclusion.

At least on the surface, it doesn’t seem unreasonable price-wise.  Maybe it’s just me, but his skill set seems more in line with a SS in a Rivera-defined defense than whatever it was Washington was doing.

people whining about 10 million guaranteed over a 3 year contract for eric reid have an agenda btw

says the guy with the ANTIFA flag. your a joke my dude! also I like this deal because the guaranteed money is pretty low. I would hope there are no guarantees for the 3rd year so If for whatever reason he does not preform well we can cut bait without any dead cap going into the 2021 off-season.

A twelve page thread filled with whining, bickering, race baiting, etc on what appears to be a pretty reasonable signing.

Huddle gonna Huddle!

Solid signing. Guaranteed money is low, likely can cut and run after year two if it doesn't work out. Finally have a quality safety under contract that isn't in his mid-30's.
