Panthers sign Eric Reid to 3-year contract

You can't spot trends using one year of data by definition. Agents and GMs use this year's market price as well as production, anticipated demand and a number of other factors in setting a contract like anticipated cost 3 years from now on a long term contract. Seems to me with this becoming more of a passing league, safeties will be more important not less. And we are not down to 12 million in cap until we see the cap for this year. 3 year deals are usually cap friendly in year 1. And no Hurney didn't have a bad FA last year unless he could forecast the future and see his players were going to get hurt. He did a good job overall with the exception of Poe which was a disappointment to everyone. Reality is you don't like Hurney and find anything to complain about.

Smith can be replaced with any practice squad player. Olsen extended after injuries and aging. As you mentioned, Dontari Poe.

Cockrell would have been important to our secondary if not for the injury. Reid was helpful.

EDIT: Forgot the whole Gano blunder.

Good.  Much more important...IMO.

However, I'm not really buying the 34 talk yet.  Maybe Ronnie Boy has really changed and is trying to get "outside the box" (hate that term) but IMO it seems more like Ron is saying things that Tepper wants to hear, not necessarily what he's going to do.

I don't doubt that Rivera would run a 3-4 (he has before). I question whether it's really gonna work as well as he probably believes.

All of us probably know people who, rather than address the real problem with something, instead latch on to some off the wall idea with the notion that it'll fix what's wrong. That's the lens I'm viewing Rivera through right now.

Yes.  Selfish, like playing out of position because it's what you want to do on a play instead of what the playbook says to do.  That's selfish and what I'm talking about.

I just think that's a stretch. Every player ends up out of position from time to time. Hell, Luke was out of position a ton early on in the season when Washington was still coordinating the defense.

Honestly, based on last year's safety free agency, we overpaid. Considerably.

Agreed. Isn't 7 per year like, really high for a safety? I mean, I like the way Reid plays, but he's not a game changer. Would have rather given a little more money to someone like Mathieu. Not super pumped about this.

If I had to guess at the base numbers and the cap hits for each season, it would break down like this:

2019: Base = $2.5 M + signing bonus $3.33 M, Hit = $5.83M
2020: Base = $3.75 M + signing bonus $3.33 M, Hit = $7.08M
2021: Base = $5.5 M + signing bonus $3.33M, Hit = $8.83M

That isn't bad at all, tbqh. Especially with only 10 mil in guarantees.

That logic is stupid as if you could fool Tepper long. Rivera will be somewhere within 30 minutes if he was canned here. He isn't worried about his job. He is going to do his best and is trying to improve. Let's see how he does before throwing him under the bus for the hundredth time.

You are a BRJS'er if I have ever seen one.

This isn't the first time we have heard this song and dance.  When someone says over and over that they are going to change, and never do....I believe actions not words.

If Ron adapts, I'll be happy.  Until then I'm trusting history, not words.

Also, gotta be that guy, but weren't we the only team in the league to even give the guy a chance? And it was $1 million salary right? I mean damn, use some leverage Hurney.

IIRC he actually turned down a one year deal with SF.

Plus, I think the way the league has evolved, safeties have more leverage this offseason

The guy is only 27 years old. We're locking him up for his prime, and can decide what to do after that.

If Marty ran an auto dealership, I'd never buy a car anywhere else.

You could just be sitting down at the table and he'd say something like "you know what, lemme give you $3,000 off that price".

This basically proves Matt Khalil is gone post June 1.

Also I hate Hurney. I’d give Tepper his dome if he got rid of Hurney.

Everyone said Hurneys bad management was on JR as he was just puppetting for JR. This proves all them wrong.

Not that I didn’t want us to resign Reid but come on man. 3.5-4 a year range, maybe 5 tops.

FWIW Honey Badger got a one year, $7M deal to prove he could still play and stay healthy. He played in 99% of their defensive snaps this past season, and had 3 sacks, 89 tackles and 2 picks.

Reid only played in around 300 less snaps (3 less games,) 91% of defensive plays for us while he was with us, had 1 sack, 71 tackles, a pick, and a forced fumble.

Basically, we got Reid for the price of a three year long "prove it" deal that Honey Badger got.

I think it will end up being a bargain.
