REPORT: Panthers will "go hard after safeties early in the 2019 NFL Draft."

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline reports that the Carolina Panthers will "go hard after safeties early in the 2019 NFL Draft."

Pauline had the Panthers select Alabama S Deionte Thompson with the No. 16 overall pick in his recent mock draft, but Nasir Adderley would also be in the mix as a first-round safety. Thompson is a first-team All-American, received high grades from PFF after a hot start to the season, and Shannon Sharpe even boldly compared Thompson to legendary safety Ed Reed. The Panthers could address safety concerns during free agency, but if not, consider the Panthers a candidate to take a safety sometime during Day 1 or Day 2.

Yeah.

Ron Rivera has no regard for the safety position.

I'll believe this only when I see it.

I could be *totally* wrong as we're super early in the process... but based on the positions the Panthers have placed value on in recent years, I would be surprised if they select a safety in round 1. It would go against trends, but that's happened before.

Hard to predict what will happen until after FA. There will be quality players at every position we need at 16 and of course if there is someone Hurney and Ron love they could move up.

Agreed.

But the likeliest thing to happen at the S position, judging by the history of Ron Rivera as head coach, is signing one (maybe even two) lower-level safety FA's and not using any high draft pick on the position.

They also showed what a good front 7 can do.

They were pressuring Goff all night, shut down any run attempt

Actually DBs were out of position a Lot, jist pressure on Goff caused bad throws.  Added in with some bad drops, and DBs making some lucky recoveries after being beat.

The 4 sacks and 12 QB hits was the story of the game.

Sad that our DL couldnt even touch Eli Manning or Stafford behind the leagues worst OL.

It all works together for sure.

however take the passes that were defensed including the interception that were downfield passes—

remember our Baltimore game? Seattle? Downfield passes that were not defensed,.. ugly.

Love the last sentence about day 1 or day 2. This is pure speculation because a guy mocked a safety to us.

Whatever you believe about Hurney he has a good track record in the 1st.

That said I doubt we go safety in 1but if so I believe Hurney will get a good player. Surprised if it’s not a pass rusher but will reserve judgement.

I've just seen little to no evidence that Ron puts this much value in the safety position. Especially considering the value he puts on a pass rush and the shape of our pass rushing corps combined with this strong edge rushers class.

Honestly, with the soft FA safety market last year, if we really wajt to upgrade the safety position we should be able to do it with a proven FA without breaking the bank. I'd go that route.
